## Story

## Before the Big Show

The big circus show was coming to town, and every seat under the tent had been sold. Ringleader Riley and his troupe had practiced for weeks, counting steps, polishing props, and learning every cue.

As the sun began to set, Riley walked backstage with his red coat buttoned and his tall hat tucked under one arm.

He stopped at once.

Mimi the clown held up a sleeve that had torn straight down the seam. Jacko the strongman searched through an empty prop trunk. Charlie the magician stared at his hat as if it had betrayed him.

"My juggling rings are gone," Mimi said.

"My painted weights are missing," Jacko said.

"And I cannot remember my opening line," Charlie whispered.

Riley looked at the clock. Ten minutes to curtain.

"Everyone," he said, calm and clear, "hands on hearts. One slow breath in. One slow breath out."

## Keeping Calm and Focused

The performers copied him. In. Out. The backstage noise softened.

"We solve one problem at a time," Riley said. "Mimi, what do you need first?"

"A sleeve that stays on," Mimi said.

"Sewing kit," Riley called.

Two acrobats hurried over with needles, thread, and bright yellow patches shaped like stars.

"Jacko, what can become weights?" Riley asked.

Jacko looked around. "Those empty paint tins?"

"Fill them with sand," Riley said. "Painted or not, you can still lift them."

Charlie swallowed. "What about my line?"

Riley softened his voice. "What do you want the audience to feel?"

"Wonder," Charlie said.

"Then start with that."

## Two Minutes to Curtain

The troupe moved quickly, but no one rushed blindly anymore.

Mimi's torn sleeve became the brightest part of her costume. Jacko's plain sand tins became a comedy bit: he pretended they were impossibly heavy, then lifted them with one finger. Charlie wrote three words on his palm: *Welcome to wonder.*

"Two minutes," called the stage manager.

Riley gathered the troupe in a circle.

"Look around," he said. "Nobody fixed everything by themselves. That is why we are ready."

Mimi bumped his shoulder with hers. "Lead the way, Riley."

## The Big Show

Riley strode into the ring as the band struck its first bright chord. Parents, grandparents, and children leaned forward in their seats.

"Welcome," Riley called, "to a night of wonder."

The curtain swept open. Mimi tumbled into the ring, her star-patched sleeve flashing as she bowed. Children pointed and laughed with delight.

Jacko marched in next, groaning under the "heavy" paint tins. He bent his knees, puffed his cheeks, and lifted them with one pinky. The audience roared.

Then Charlie stepped forward. For one tiny second, he looked at his palm.

"Welcome to wonder," he said.

With a flick of his wrist, three paper birds flew from his hat and circled Riley's head. The crowd gasped.

Every act carried a small sign of the backstage scramble, but those signs made the show feel alive. The audience did not see a ruined plan. They saw performers who trusted each other enough to keep going.

## After the Curtain

After the final bow, the applause rolled through the tent.

Backstage, Charlie held up his hand. The three words had smudged into a blue blur.

"I did not need the words after all," he said.

"You had the feeling," Riley said. "That mattered more."

Mimi touched the star patch on her sleeve. "Can I keep this?"

"You should," Jacko said. "It is proof that a problem can become part of the show."

Riley hung his tall hat on a peg and smiled at his tired, glowing troupe. The next performance would bring its own surprises. Tonight had shown them they could face those surprises together.
