## Story

## The Mischievous Monkey

The circus grounds were busy from morning until night. Acrobats stretched beside the ring, clowns painted bright smiles in small mirrors, and musicians tuned their trumpets near the popcorn stand.

In the middle of all that bustle lived Mango, a small monkey with quick paws and curious eyes. Mango was not mean, but he loved games that nobody else knew they were playing.

He hid juggling scarves inside drums. He tucked bananas into top hats. Once, he tied three shoelaces together and looked surprised when the clowns walked in a circle.

"Mango," said Rosa the trainer, "funny is fine. Unsafe is not."

Mango blinked sweetly. Then he reached for her whistle.

"No," Rosa said, laughing despite herself.

## Missing Props

On the afternoon of the big show, Rosa checked Mango's little play yard. The gate stood open.

"Mango?" she called.

A banana peel dropped from the rigging.

Rosa looked up. A tiny tail vanished behind a curtain.

Soon everyone noticed something missing. The ringmaster could not find his shiny baton. The juggler was short one red ball. A clown opened his hat and found a peanut shell instead of a flower.

"We need Mango back before showtime," Rosa said. "But no chasing. If he gets worried, he will go higher."

Three siblings who lived with the circus stepped forward. Nora was careful, Ben was brave, and Tilly noticed tiny details.

"We can follow clues," Tilly said.

## Siblings on a Mission

The siblings began where Mango had started: the open gate.

"One banana peel," Nora said, pointing.

"Two peanut shells," Ben added.

"And a red feather from the costume trunk," Tilly said. "Mango went toward the dressing tent."

They asked the acrobats if they had seen him.

"Only a blur," said one acrobat. "A blur carrying a baton."

They asked the musicians.

"We heard chattering near the snack cart," said the trumpet player.

The siblings followed the trail slowly, speaking in quiet voices so Mango would not think it was a chasing game.

## Following the Clues

The trail led behind the snack cart, around the costume tent, and straight to the tallest tree beside the big top.

"There," Ben whispered.

Mango sat on a branch wearing the ringmaster's shiny baton like a crown. The missing red ball was tucked under one arm.

"Mango," Nora called gently. "The show needs those."

Mango hugged the ball tighter.

"He thinks we will take the game away," Tilly said.

Ben looked at the tree, then at the bananas on the snack cart. "What if we trade?"

"Not a trick," Nora said. "A real trade."

Tilly nodded. "And maybe a job. Mango likes being part of things."

They gathered a banana, a small basket, and one bright ribbon.

## A Patient Trade

Nora placed the banana on the basket and stepped back.

"Mango," she said, "if you bring back the baton and the ball, you may carry this basket to Rosa."

Ben held up the ribbon. "Official helper ribbon."

Mango leaned down from the branch.

"No grabbing," Tilly reminded her brother.

Ben put his hands behind his back.

Mango came lower, one branch at a time. He dropped the red ball into the basket. Then he handed Nora the baton.

"Thank you," Nora said.

Mango accepted the ribbon and puffed out his little chest.

## Props Returned

Rosa met them at the ring entrance with a relieved smile.

"You found him without worrying him," she said.

"Tilly followed clues," Ben said.

"Nora kept us patient," Tilly said.

"Ben thought of the trade," Nora said.

Mango placed the basket by Rosa's feet and gave a proud chatter.

"And Mango helped return the props," Rosa added.

That night, the show began right on time. The ringmaster lifted his shiny baton. The juggler tossed the red ball high. And near the curtain, Mango sat beside Rosa with his helper ribbon tied neatly around his shoulders.

When the final applause came, Mango clapped too.
