## Story

## The Circus Friends

Jax the juggler, Aria the aerialist, and Milo the magician were close friends under the big top. They practiced after breakfast, after lunch, and sometimes after dinner when the tent lights glowed warm and gold.

Jax could keep five bright balls in the air. Aria could swing from the low trapeze with toes pointed and chin high. Milo could pull silk ribbons from an empty sleeve.

"Town show tomorrow," Jax said, catching a blue ball behind his back.

"Our biggest crowd yet," Aria said.

Milo tapped his wand against his palm. "Then we give them our kindest, brightest show."

## The Bullies

The next morning, the friends found a group of older children near the ticket booth. The children were whispering to people in line.

"The juggler always drops everything," one child said.

"The aerialist is too nervous to swing," said another.

"The magician's tricks are fake," said a third.

Milo's fingers tightened around his wand.

"They do not even know our show," Aria said.

Jax looked at the ground. "What if people believe them?"

## Feeling Small

Backstage, the three friends sat on a trunk in a row.

"My hands feel shaky," Jax admitted.

"My knees too," Aria said.

"My hat feels empty," Milo said, peering inside it.

That made them laugh a little.

Their ringmaster, Miss Lina, knelt beside them. "You do not have to answer unkindness with unkindness," she said. "You can answer by staying safe, asking for help, and doing what you practiced."

"But what if they shout during the show?" Jax asked.

"Then I will speak to the ushers," Miss Lina said. "Your job is not to manage unkind behavior. Your job is to stay safe and support one another."

## The Plan Before the Show

The trio made a plan that kept everyone calm.

"If I hear shouting, I will look at Milo's purple scarf," Jax said. "That will remind me where to focus."

"If I feel nervous on the trapeze, I will listen for Jax counting the beats," Aria said.

"And I will make my first trick about rumors," Milo said.

He pulled three gray paper clouds from his hat. On each one, he wrote an unkind sentence. Then he folded the clouds into tiny birds.

"I will let them fly away," Milo said.

Aria smiled. "That is a good trick."

"It is a good reminder," Milo said.

## Show Time

The lights brightened. The band began to play. Jax, Aria, and Milo stepped into the ring together.

Near the back row, the bullies crossed their arms.

"Watch him drop it," one muttered.

Jax heard the words. He looked at Milo's purple scarf and began to count.

"One, two, three, four."

The balls rose and dropped in perfect arcs.

Aria stepped up to the low trapeze. Jax counted the beat softly so only she could hear.

"One, two. One, two."

Aria swung, turned, and landed with both feet steady.

Then Milo stepped forward with the gray paper clouds.

"Sometimes people say things that are not true," he told the audience. "A rumor can feel heavy."

He opened his hand. The clouds became birds and floated above the ring.

"But truth has wings."

The tent burst into applause.

## Inspiring Others

The cheering grew louder with every act. A few children near the back turned toward the bullies.

"Let them perform," one child said.

An usher walked over and spoke quietly with the older children. The whispering stopped.

Jax tossed a ball to Milo, Milo changed it into a red silk flower, and Aria caught the flower from her trapeze. She tucked it behind her ear and bowed from the platform.

The audience rose to its feet.

The trio bowed together, hand in hand.

## What Changed

After the show, a small child came to the backstage curtain.

"How did you stay brave?" she asked.

Jax held up one juggling ball. "I looked at my friends."

Aria touched the red silk flower behind her ear. "I listened for help."

Milo opened his hat and let one last paper bird flutter out. "And we let the untrue words fly away."

Outside the tent, Miss Lina spoke with the older children near the gate. One of them shuffled their feet.

"Your magic trick was good," the child said quietly.

Milo stayed beside Miss Lina and nodded. "Thank you."

Jax added, "You can watch the show without trying to spoil it."

The child looked down. "Sorry."

The three friends did not need a bigger speech than that. They had a show to pack up, a friendship to celebrate, and a bright red flower that Aria decided to keep for every performance after.

Aria tucked the flower into her costume trunk.

"For next time?" Milo asked.

"For every time," she said.

The three friends carried their props back toward the tent together. Behind them, the audience was still talking about the show. In front of them, the next town was already waiting.
