## Story

## Elephant and Monkey's Idea

Elephant and Monkey were best friends who loved making the jungle laugh.

One sunny morning, Monkey swung down beside Elephant with a leaf tucked behind his ear like a hat.

"We should put on a jungle show," Monkey said. "A big one."

"How big?" asked Elephant.

Monkey stretched his arms wide. "Bigger than a banana tree."

Elephant thought about that. "We can make it safe first, then big."

They invited their friends to a talent day by the riverbank. Giraffe could hang lanterns. Parrot could announce each act. Tortoise could keep time with a coconut drum.

## Gathering Supplies

Elephant and Monkey searched for things the jungle could spare.

They found smooth seed pods for juggling, broad leaves for shade, and fallen vines for decorations.

Monkey tugged on a vine between two trees. "We could walk across this."

The vine dipped almost to the ground.

Elephant shook his head. "Too wobbly."

"But it would look exciting."

"So would landing in the mud," Elephant said.

Monkey imagined the splash. Then he laughed. "Decorations it is."

Together they tied the vines around the stage area, low and loose, where no one could trip.

## Practice Makes Better

Practice was messy at first.

Elephant tried to toss three seed pods and dropped two.

Monkey tried to beat the coconut drum and missed the rhythm.

Tortoise tapped once. "Slow down."

So they slowed down.

Elephant juggled two seed pods instead of three. Monkey tapped a simple beat. Giraffe moved one lantern because it was too close to Parrot's perch.

"This show is smaller than my first idea," Monkey said.

"It is also standing up," Elephant said.

Monkey looked around at the neat stage, the safe path, and the smiling friends. "Standing up is good."

## The Big Debut

By afternoon, animals gathered beside the river.

Parrot fluffed his feathers. "Welcome to talent day."

Tortoise began the beat. Tap. Tap. Tap.

Monkey danced between the decorated vines. Elephant tossed two seed pods in a slow, steady pattern. Giraffe dipped the lanterns so they shimmered in the sun.

When one seed pod bounced away, Monkey caught it in his tail and bowed.

The audience cheered.

Elephant laughed so hard he almost dropped the other seed pod too.

## After the Bow

After the show, Monkey sat beside Elephant on the riverbank.

"I wanted the biggest show," Monkey said. "But this one felt better."

"Because everyone helped build it," Elephant said.

"And because no one landed in the mud."

"That too."

They thanked their friends one by one: Tortoise for the steady beat, Giraffe for the lanterns, Parrot for the announcements, and everyone for listening when a plan needed changing.

The next week, the jungle animals planned a picnic stage, a story corner, and a drum circle.

Monkey brought the decorations.

Elephant brought the first question: "How do we make it safe?"
