## Story

## Beatrice's Dilemma

Beatrice was getting ready for the carnival show when she reached for her silver hand mirror.

It was not on the dressing table.

It was not in the scarf drawer.

It was not beside her curls brush.

"Oh no," Beatrice said. "I use that mirror before every show."

Two siblings, Maya and Ben, were visiting with their aunt, who worked at the costume booth.

"Can we help search?" Maya asked.

"Yes," said Beatrice. "But we stay together and ask before touching anything."

## The Search Begins

They made a clue list.

Last seen: dressing table.

Shiny: yes.

Borrowed: maybe.

A clown remembered seeing something silver near the funhouse entrance.

"Then we ask the funhouse manager," Ben said.

The manager nodded. "I found a mirror near the ticket mat and put it in found property."

But the found-property box held only a spoon, a button, and one tired rubber chicken.

## Into the Funhouse

The manager walked with them into the mirror hallway.

Maya saw herself tall, then tiny, then wiggly as a ribbon.

"Focus on real clues," Beatrice said, smiling.

Near the floor, Ben spotted a trail of silver glitter.

It led to the prop shelf, where a small monkey puppet sat wearing Beatrice's mirror like a hat.

## The Monkey Puppet

"That puppet belongs to the comedy booth," said the manager.

No one chased. No one grabbed. Beatrice carefully lifted the mirror from the puppet's head.

Taped to the back was a note:

Borrowed for polishing. Got called to stage. Sorry. - Pip

"Pip the prop clown," Beatrice said. "He must have forgotten to return it."

## Found in Time

Pip hurried in with a polishing cloth.

"I am so sorry," he said. "I wanted it to sparkle for your act."

"Kind idea," Beatrice said. "Missing mirror."

Pip nodded. "Next time I ask and return it myself."

Beatrice checked her curls in the mirror, then bowed to Maya and Ben.

"Mystery solved."

## Paper Detective Badges

Before the show, Beatrice gave the siblings paper detective badges.

"You asked good questions," she said. "That is how a search becomes a solution."

Maya looked at her badge. "And we stayed together."

"Best clue of all," said Ben.
