## Story

## The Circus Needs Help

Samantha and Max loved the family circus best in the hour before sunset.

That was when the tent glowed orange, the ticket booth smelled like fresh sawdust, and their parents practiced the acrobat act that usually closed the show.

One afternoon, a rigging rope snapped during rehearsal. Their parents were safe, but both were hurt enough to need rest and care for several weeks.

"The show can change," their mother said from the recovery cot. "People matter more than the act."

Samantha nodded, but her throat felt tight. The circus still had bills, workers, and animals to care for. She and Max wanted to help.

## A New Act

"We need something we can do safely," Samantha said.

"I can flip," Max said.

"I can juggle," Samantha said.

They tried both at once.

Samantha tossed three balls. Max cartwheeled too close. One ball bounced off his shoulder. Another rolled under a trunk.

"You are in my space," Samantha snapped.

"Your balls are everywhere," Max snapped back.

Their father cleared his throat from the doorway. "Try saying what you need before you try again."

So they taped a wide circle on the floor for Max. Samantha marked a smaller circle where she could stand. Then they counted together.

"One, two, toss."

This time, Max flipped around Samantha instead of through her juggling path.

## Practice Problems

The routine improved, but not all at once.

Some days Max landed late. Some days Samantha threw too high. Once, they both bowed at the wrong time and bumped heads.

They laughed after that, but only after checking that neither of them was hurt.

"Again?" Max asked.

Samantha rubbed her forehead. "Again, but slower."

They practiced after school, before supper, and once in the rain when the tent roof sounded like a thousand tapping fingers. Their parents watched, offered small notes, and reminded them to rest.

## Opening Night

On opening night, the big top was not full, but it was not empty either.

Samantha stood behind the curtain with three bright balls in her hands. Max bounced once on his toes.

"One, two, toss?" he whispered.

"One, two, toss," Samantha whispered back.

The music began.

Samantha stepped into the light and started the rhythm. Max rolled into the circle, sprang up, and flipped around her while the first ball arced overhead.

The audience leaned forward.

One, two, toss.

Flip, catch, grin.

When Samantha tossed the final ball high, Max spun beneath it and landed with both hands out. The ball dropped neatly into his palms.

For one quiet second, no one moved.

Then the tent filled with applause.

## More Than Saving the Show

Their parents hugged them backstage.

"You did not copy our act," their mother said. "You made your own."

Samantha looked at Max. "We made it after arguing a lot."

"And listening a little better each time," Max said.

The circus was not fixed in one night. Some shows were small. Some weeks were hard. But people began coming back to see the new sibling act, and the family had time to heal.

Before every performance, Samantha and Max stood at their marks.

"One, two, toss," Samantha said.

"One, two, together," Max answered.
