## Story

## The Circus Comes to Town

The circus tent was full of busy sounds.

Drums rolled. Ribbons swished. Popcorn popped near the entrance.

The ringmaster hurried across the stage with his top hat, cane, whistle, note cards, spare gloves, and a pencil tucked behind one ear.

"Welcome, welcome," he practiced.

Then his note cards slipped.

Flutter, flutter, scatter.

Cards slid under chairs. One landed in a popcorn bucket. Another clung to the bottom of his shoe.

The ringmaster stared at the mess. "Oh dear."

## The Strongman Steps In

Bram the strongman was nearby, carrying a crate of wooden hoops.

He set the crate down gently. "Want a hand?"

The ringmaster looked embarrassed. "I was trying to look prepared."

"Prepared people drop things too," Bram said.

He picked up the cards one by one and read the numbers in the corner.

"This is card three," Bram said. "It was hiding behind a chair."

"Card five," called a child in the front row, holding it up.

"Thank you," said the ringmaster, taking it with a bow.

## Kindness Goes a Long Way

Soon, three children and two performers were helping too.

No one laughed at the ringmaster. No one grabbed. They checked under seats, behind curtains, and near the drum.

Bram found the last card clinging to the ringmaster's shoe.

"Important announcement," Bram said solemnly. "Your shoe has been reading ahead."

The ringmaster laughed first. Then everyone else did too.

He stacked the cards in order and tapped them straight. "Thank you. I felt small for a moment."

Bram flexed one arm, then pointed to the helpers. "Strong is easier with a team."

## The Circus Show Begins

When the music started, the ringmaster stepped into the center ring.

This time, his note cards were clipped together with a bright red clothespin.

"Welcome, welcome," he called.

The show rolled on: clowns tumbled across soft mats, acrobats balanced in pairs, dancers spun ribbons, and Bram lifted a painted barbell filled with feathers.

At the end of Bram's act, he pretended the feather barbell was too heavy.

"Can anyone help?" he asked.

The ringmaster stepped forward, lifted one finger under the bar, and Bram sprang upright.

"Saved," Bram cried.

The audience roared with laughter.

## After the Applause

Later, when families headed home, the ringmaster and Bram packed the last props together.

"You helped me before I even asked," said the ringmaster.

"You looked like you needed a quiet rescue," Bram said.

A child who had found card five came back with her father.

"I made you something," she said, handing the ringmaster a paper pocket for his note cards.

The ringmaster tucked the cards inside. "Perfect fit."

Bram smiled. "See? Kindness can be strong, small, and made of paper."

The ringmaster placed the paper pocket carefully inside his coat.

This time, nothing tumbled out.
