## Story

## The Careful Tightrope Walker

Timmy grew up around circus wire walkers.

He loved their balance poles, silver shoes, and careful bows. He did not love the fluttery feeling in his stomach when he stepped onto even the lowest wire.

Chuckles the clown found him sitting beside the mat.

"Worry visiting again?" Chuckles asked.

Timmy nodded.

"Then we give worry a chair, but we do not let it drive the wagon."

Timmy laughed. "What does that mean?"

"It means one small step."

## One Small Step

Chuckles set a practice wire a few inches over a thick mat.

"Breathe in," he said. "Breathe out. Look at the red star on the wall."

Timmy stood beside the wire first.

Then he touched it with one foot.

Then he stood on it while Chuckles held his hand.

"This is not like solid ground," Timmy said.

"True," Chuckles said. "So we respect it."

## The Big Day Arrives

At the family show, Timmy chose the low practice wire.

His friends sat near the front. Chuckles stood beside the mat. The red star was taped to the far post.

Timmy's knees buzzed.

"You can stop whenever you need," Chuckles reminded him.

## Taking Those First Steps

Timmy stepped onto the wire.

One step.

Breathe.

One step.

Look at the star.

He wobbled near the middle, paused, and held the balance pole still.

The audience stayed quiet.

Then Timmy took the last two steps and reached the mat.

## Triumph With Practice

The clapping started softly, then grew.

Timmy bowed, proud and shaky at the same time.

"I felt nervous the whole way," he told Chuckles.

"And you listened to your training the whole way," Chuckles said.

## Patience, Practice, and Support

Timmy kept practicing after that.

Some days he crossed. Some days he only stood beside the wire and breathed.

Both kinds of days counted.

When worry visited, Timmy pictured it sitting in a chair beside the mat.

"You can watch," he whispered to it. "But I am taking the next step."
