# Tilly and Max Find a New Stage

_A Tightrope Walker and Her Dog Adapt to Change_

When Tilly's circus closes, she and her dog Max set out to find a new place to perform. Their trip is not about becoming the greatest in history; it is about asking for help, adapting to change, and discovering that a good friend makes uncertain roads feel less wobbly.

## Story

## Tilly's Circus Changes

Tilly was a careful tightrope walker with a small brown dog named Max.

Max carried her practice chalk in a tiny pouch. He also knew when Tilly needed a break, because he would sit on her shoe and refuse to move.

One rainy morning, the circus director gathered everyone.

"We have to close for a while," she said. "The wagons need repairs, and we cannot tour safely until they are fixed."

Tilly felt as if the floor had tipped. She had always known where she belonged: under the big tent, one careful step at a time.

## Tilly and Max Begin

Tilly packed her balance pole, her chalk, and Max's favorite blanket.

"We are not running away," she told Max. "We are looking for work."

Max wagged as if he understood the difference.

Their first stop was a village fair. The manager had no tightrope, only a small wooden stage.

"I cannot do my usual act," Tilly said.

Max placed both paws on the stage and barked once.

Tilly smiled. "But maybe we can make a smaller one."

## Unsure, Then Found

On the way to the next town, fog covered the road.

Tilly stopped walking. "I do not know this path."

Max sniffed the ground, then looked back at her.

"No guessing," Tilly said. "We ask."

They waited by a signpost until a farmer came by with a cart. He pointed them toward the safe road and gave Max a biscuit.

"Thank you," Tilly said. "You saved us a long, muddy mistake."

## A Far-Off Town

The next town had never seen a tightrope act.

The children asked if Tilly was a dancer. The baker asked if Max was the manager.

"Sometimes," Tilly said, and Max sat up proudly.

Instead of a high wire, Tilly stretched a low practice line across the stage with mats underneath. She showed the audience how balance worked: eyes forward, arms steady, breath slow.

Max trotted beside the mat carrying the chalk pouch.

The children leaned in, fascinated.

## A New Kind of Show

Tilly did not become the greatest tightrope walker in history.

She became something better for that season: a performer who could adapt.

At each stop, she built the act to fit the place. A low line at the fair. A balance lesson at the school. A chalk-path game in the town square.

Max greeted every audience like an old friend.

## The New Adventure

One evening, Tilly and Max rested under a wagon awning.

"This is not the adventure I planned," Tilly said.

Max rested his chin on her knee.

"I miss the old tent," she admitted. "But I like finding new ways."

The repaired circus would be ready someday. Until then, Tilly had a low line, a clever dog, and a road that no longer felt quite so uncertain.

Max thumped his tail.

That was his way of applauding.
