## Story

## The Plan

Lily was a little girl who loved spending time outside. One sunny morning, she had an idea for a picnic in the park with her parents. She asked if they could share sandwiches under the trees and spend the afternoon together.

However, Lily's parents were too busy with work to make a real plan for their family outing. They kept putting it off, saying they had calls to answer and emails to finish.

But Lily kept trying. She knew how much fun picnics could be, and she wanted to find a plan that would work.

So she decided to plan what she could on her own. She pictured a quiet day at the park where everyone could sit under the trees and talk without work interrupting.

Lily began packing their favorite snacks into small containers: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grapes, cheese sticks, and a few napkins folded into triangles.

Her excitement grew as she packed. She imagined how happy her parents might look when they saw lunch waiting in the park.

Lily zipped the picnic bag closed and carried it to the door, ready to try her plan.

## Distractions

Lily's parents were busy with work, and they kept getting interrupted by calls and messages. She tried to get their attention, but nothing seemed to work.

She tried playing games with them. "Mommy, Daddy, can we play a game?" she said. But her parents were too focused on their phones to pay attention.

Lily decided to tell them some jokes. "Why did the chicken cross the road?" she asked. But before she could even finish the punchline, her dad got another call and rushed off.

Lily started to feel frustrated and disappointed that her picnic plans were not going as expected. Then she remembered something: a trick her grandma had taught her when they went on a hike last summer.

"Hey, Mommy, can you help me find some sticks? I want to build a fort like Grandma showed me," Lily said.

Her mom looked up from her phone and saw how determined Lily was about building the fort. It reminded her of the hike they had taken last summer, when no one had checked a screen for hours.

Within minutes, everyone had gathered around to build the coolest fort Lily had ever seen in the park. They used branches as walls and leaves as roofs while giggling at each other every step of the way.

For a little while, no one thought about work calls or messages. They were too busy laughing together under the trees.

Then Dad's phone rang, and everyone looked up. Lily looked at the half-built fort and decided she needed a better plan.

## Lily Takes Charge

Lily was feeling disappointed and frustrated. She wanted to have a picnic with her parents, but they were too busy with work to pay attention to her. The more she tried to get their attention, the more distracted they became.

Finally, Lily had enough. If her parents were not going to make room for a family afternoon, she would help make room herself.

With fresh determination, Lily gathered everything she needed for the picnic: sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. When her parents had a quiet moment between calls, she asked them to walk with her to the park.

As soon as they arrived, Lily began searching for a quiet spot where they could relax without interruptions from work calls or messages.

After walking around for what felt like hours, though it was probably only minutes, she found a quiet spot under a big tree. A gentle breeze moved through the leaves, and birds chirped nearby.

Lily laid out a blanket on the grassy ground before unpacking the food and drinks from her basket. Her parents stood nearby, looking at their phones one last time.

Lily smoothed the blanket corners, lined up the sandwiches, and smiled at the quiet spot she had found all by herself.

## A Fun-Filled Picnic Day

Lily's parents finally put their work aside and sat down with her under the shade of a big tree. The breeze was soothing, the sun was shining bright, and Lily had prepared some delicious sandwiches that they all enjoyed munching on.

After eating until everyone was full, Lily suggested playing games. They played "I Spy," taking turns guessing things they could see. Then they played catch with a soft ball that Dad had brought while Mom cheered from the blanket.

As the day went on, they explored more of the park together. They spotted colorful flowers and chased after butterflies, laughing all along.

They saw a pond full of fish near a bridge and stopped to watch the silver shapes dart through the water. Dad pointed out how the fish used their fins to turn, and Lily leaned over the rail, fascinated.

Soon it was time for dessert. Mom pulled homemade brownies from her bag, and everyone nibbled them while the leaves rustled overhead.

When it started getting late, Mom reached for her phone and then remembered she had left it at home. For a moment, everyone went quiet. Then Mom laughed. "Maybe that helped," she said.

As they packed up their picnic gear and headed home, Lily already hoped they would come back soon.

## Dad's Promise

As they were enjoying their picnic, Lily's dad grew quiet. He looked at the crumbs on the blanket, the grass stains on Lily's knees, and the ball resting beside the tree.

"I am sorry for being so distracted earlier," Dad said to Lily and Mom. "I promise from now on, I will make sure we have more time together as a family."

Lily hugged her dad tightly. She knew his work mattered, but this afternoon mattered too.

Mom smiled warmly at Dad and said, "That sounds like a great idea. We can plan more fun activities together, like walks or bike rides."

Dad nodded. "Yes, and we can even invite some of our friends too."

Lily clapped at the thought of having more adventures with her family. She loved spending time outdoors and exploring new places.

The rest of the afternoon was spent laughing, playing games, and enjoying each other's company without work emails or calls.

When it was finally time to pack up and head home, Lily tucked the last napkin into the basket and smiled at the promise of more afternoons like this one.

## The Next Picnic

The next week, Lily's family kept their promise.

They returned to the same big tree with a smaller basket, a soft ball, and one clear rule: no work messages until they got home.

As they packed up after the picnic, Lily's dad folded his work papers and slid them into his bag without opening them. "I missed this," he said. "We should protect another afternoon next week."

Lily folded the picnic blanket with a proud little smile. Planning the day had taken effort, but the laughter under the big tree made every careful step worth it.

On the walk home, her parents each held one of her hands. They were already choosing the next afternoon they would keep free for family time.
