## Story

## The Dried Up Pond

In a big city park, there lived a family of ducks. Mama Duck and her ducklings spent their days swimming, splashing, and nibbling pond plants together.

But one day, something strange happened. The sun was shining as usual, but when the ducks waddled over to their pond, they found cracked mud where the water used to be. There was no place left to swim.

Mama Duck felt concerned seeing her little ones looking so disappointed. She knew they needed water and food to stay healthy. She gathered all her ducklings together and decided that they would have to leave their home behind in search of a new one with plenty of water.

The path ahead looked long, but Mama Duck was determined to find a safe new home for her family.

## The Search Begins

Mama Duck knew that they could not stay by the dried-up pond any longer. They needed to find a new home with water and food for her family. She gathered all her ducklings and told them about their new adventure.

"Quack, quack, my dear ducklings," said Mama Duck. "We cannot stay here now that our pond has dried up. We will find a new home where we can swim and play together."

The little ducklings were excited but also a bit unsure. They had never left the park before. Mama Duck noticed their worry and said, "Stay close to me, little ones. We will cross the city together."

Off they went, waddling through the busy streets of the big city. They passed tall buildings, honking cars, and people hurrying to work or school.

The ducks saw things they had never seen before: bright signs, restaurant windows, bus stops, and huge billboards.

At a crosswalk, kind humans stopped their cars and waited while Mama Duck led her ducklings across the street. One person even held up a hand to make sure the ducklings reached the curb safely.

After a long walk, when every little webbed foot was tired, they reached the edge of town. Ahead of them was a beautiful lake surrounded by trees.

## A New Home?

The lake shimmered in the afternoon light. The water was clear, and reeds rustled along the shore. Mama Duck's heart lifted. It seemed like the perfect place to call home.

As they approached the lake's edge, Mama Duck noticed other creatures swimming and working in the water. A loud thwack sounded behind them.

"Who goes there?" called a low voice.

Mama Duck turned around to see a group of beavers staring at her and her ducklings. Their flat tails rested on the mud, and their whiskers twitched as they frowned.

"We do," Mama Duck replied. "We are looking for a new home because our pond has dried up."

One beaver stepped forward. "This lake is our home. Why should we share it?"

Mama Duck thought carefully. "We do not want to take your home," she said. "We only need a safe place to swim and sleep. We can help watch for danger, keep the shore tidy, and warn the other animals if people leave trash near the water."

The beavers still looked unsure, but they could see that Mama Duck meant no harm.

## Sharing the Stream

Mama Duck knew it would not be easy to share a lake where other animals already lived. She gathered her family and spoke with the beavers beside the stream that fed the lake.

The ducks needed open water. The beavers needed their dam and lodge to stay safe. Mama Duck suggested a plan: the ducks would nest near the reeds, the beavers would keep their lodge by the dam, and everyone would leave space for the others.

The animals began working around the water's edge. They gathered sticks, leaves, mud, and grass. The ducks made nests near the reeds while rabbits dug burrows under the bushes.

Squirrels collected nuts and acorns for their tree hollows. Birds chirped as they searched for twigs to build nests nearby.

As each animal worked on its home, the others watched for ways to help. A beaver pushed a branch closer to the ducks. A rabbit showed the ducklings a quiet path through the grass. The ducks quacked loudly when a dog ran too close to the shore.

Soon, each animal had a comfortable place to live near the lake.

## Living in Harmony

It was not easy at first for the animals to work together, but they soon realized that sharing was better than arguing over food and space. The ducks and beavers learned how to share the lake and stream, while other animals like rabbits and squirrels shared their burrows with birds who needed a place to rest.

The ducks helped keep the water clear by eating pond plants, while beavers built dams that created calm pools for everyone else. Rabbits made tunnels under bushes so smaller creatures could hide from danger, and squirrels gathered nuts to share.

As seasons changed, each animal had something special to contribute. Ducks taught ducklings how to swim. Beavers showed them how branches could shape the stream. Rabbits dug small holes where seeds could grow into plants.

Mama Duck was amazed by what they had built together. No one had needed to push another family away. There was room because each animal had listened.

At night, when everything grew quiet around the lake, Mama Duck tucked her ducklings beneath her wings. Nearby, the beavers rested in their lodge, rabbits curled in their burrows, and birds settled into their nests.

The lake was not only a new home for the ducks. It was a shared home, made safer by every animal who cared for it.
