## Story

## The Power Goes Out

The Johnson family lived in a big apartment building. One day, while they were watching TV and playing video games, a loud thunderstorm hit the city. The power went out in their entire building. Screens blinked off, and the whole place went dim.

At first, everyone was grumpy because they could not use their phones or watch TV. Mom lit a few candles, and Dad found the big flashlight in the kitchen drawer.

A huge clap of thunder shook the windows. Everyone jumped at once, then burst out laughing.

The storm kept rumbling, and the lights stayed off. The apartment was still dim, but the family began to wonder what else they could do together.

## Finding Fun Without Electricity

The Johnson family gathered around the coffee table. Rain tapped the windows, and their blank screens lay useless on the couch. Mom noticed everyone's long faces and reached for the deck of cards.

"Hey, everyone," she said, "we can still have fun without electronics. We can play cards by candlelight."

Mom shuffled the cards while Dad set the candles safely around the room. They all gathered around the coffee table and began playing Go Fish.

As they played cards, everyone started telling silly stories that made them laugh so hard that tears rolled down their faces. Even little Lily joined in with her own funny stories about her imaginary friend named Mr. Snuggles.

Dad remembered his guitar in the closet. He brought it out, tuned it softly, and strummed a few chords.

"We can sing some campfire songs," he said as he began playing "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain." Everyone joined in, tapping their feet to keep rhythm.

The room was still dim, but it no longer felt empty. Cards, songs, and silly stories filled the space where the television had been.

They laughed until the storm felt farther away.

## Scavenger Hunt by Flashlight

After cards and songs, Dad lifted his flashlight like a torch.

"Scavenger hunt?" he asked.

"Scavenger hunt," the kids cheered.

They split into two teams: Mom and Dad on one team, Lily and her siblings on the other. They set out with their flashlights, eager to find the hidden clues.

As they moved through the quiet hallways, they noticed things they usually rushed past. A painting near the stairs looked mysterious in the flashlight beam. Tiny glow stickers from an old building party still shimmered near the mailboxes.

Before long, both teams had found most of the items on their lists. Then the hallway seemed to grow darker, and Lily moved a little closer to her siblings.

## Stars on the Ceiling

Little Lily had an idea. She ran to her room and brought back the glow stars she usually saved for bedtime. Her siblings helped her press them across the living room ceiling.

Everyone gathered beneath the soft green glow. Mom suggested one last round of hide-and-seek, and the kids tucked themselves behind curtains, under tables, and beside the sofa while Dad counted with his eyes covered.

Just before bedtime, the ceiling light flickered once, then glowed bright again. Everyone cheered, then looked around at the glowing stars and flashlight clues they had made together.

"Next month," Lily said, "can we do the hunt even if the power stays on?"

Mom and Dad looked at each other and nodded.

## The Lights Are Back On

The Johnson family cheered when the lights finally came back on after several hours by flashlight.

Mom heated soup on the stove while Dad checked one message, then put his phone face down on the counter. Lily switched on the hallway light and laughed when the glow stars still shone faintly above them.

As they sat down to eat dinner by the bright kitchen light, they talked about the funniest clues, the best hand puppets, and Dad's loudest song.

After dinner, Mom announced a new plan. Once a month, they would turn off the screens after dinner and choose something to do together.

Everyone agreed. They spent the rest of the evening playing one more board game and telling funny stories until it was time for bed.

When everyone snuggled into bed, Lily looked up at the stars still glowing on her ceiling. The power was back, but she left the lamp off a little longer.
