## Story

## The Mess in the Park

Lily, Max, Ava, and Sam loved the city park on sunny days. They ran races on the path, played tag near the swings, and spread picnic blankets under the tall trees.

One Saturday, their hide-and-seek game stopped before Sam finished counting. Candy wrappers crackled under the slide. Plastic bottles rolled near the bench. A chip bag floated in the fountain.

The four friends frowned at the mess.

"We cannot play tag through all this trash," Lily said.

Max looked toward the picnic tables. "We should clean it up, but we need gloves."

Ava waved to her dad and the park worker near the gate. Soon the children had gloves, two trash bags, and a small bin for bottles and cans.

Sam grinned. "Then we are The City Park Cleanup Crew."

## Dividing the Park

Lily, Max, Ava, and Sam stood by the fountain and looked across the park. The job was too big for everyone to run in the same direction.

"Hey, guys," Lily said. "What if we divide the park into sections? That way, we can each focus on one area and get things cleaned up more quickly."

The others liked the plan. Lily took the path by the swings. Max chose the picnic tables. Ava and Sam started near the fountain, where most of the bottles had gathered.

"Bottles and cans go in this bin," Max said. "Everything else goes in the bag unless a grown-up says to leave it."

Ava pulled on her gloves. "I will start with these plastic bottles. Sam, can you hold the bin?"

Sam held the bin open while Ava dropped the bottles inside one by one.

They moved slowly and checked with the park worker when they found anything sharp or strange. Soon the first bag grew heavy, and the ground around the fountain looked clear again.

Lily tied the bag carefully. "One section done."

Max pointed to the picnic tables. "Three to go."

## Candy Wrapper Contest

As Lily, Max, Ava, and Sam kept working, they saw that the wrappers were hiding everywhere: under benches, beside tree roots, and around the sandbox. Instead of getting discouraged, they turned the search into a contest.

"I bet I can collect more candy wrappers than anyone," Max said.

"You are on," Lily said with a grin.

"I will check for empty cans by the picnic tables," Ava said.

"And I will take care of those plastic bags by the playground," Sam said.

The four friends worked until the paths were clear enough for a stroller to roll through. They high-fived with their gloved hands and laughed at the grass stains on their knees.

"I cannot believe how much we found," Ava said.

Lily looked across the open grass. "And now everyone can use the park again."

They kept going until the last wrapper was in the bag and the bottles were in the recycling bin.

The City Park Cleanup Crew lined up the full bags beside the park worker's cart, ready to be taken away.

## Sorting the Park Trash

When the park worker brought an extra recycling bin, the friends helped sort what they had collected. Lily held up a glass bottle.

"Recycling?" she asked.

"Yes," Max said, reading the picture on the bin. "Glass goes here."

Ava picked up an apple core from the picnic table. "Not recycling."

"Compost, if the park has a compost bin," the park worker said. "Today, put it in this bag."

Sam held up a crushed plastic bottle. "I saw a video where an artist made sculptures from bottles. Could we make something too?"

"Posters would help more today," Ava said. "People need to know which bin to use."

At a picnic table, they drew clear pictures: bottles and cans for recycling, food scraps for compost, and wrappers for trash. Lily wrote, "Keep our park ready for play."

They taped the posters near the bins with the park worker's help.

"Now people do not have to guess," Max said.

## Sweet Rewards for the City Park Cleanup Crew

By late afternoon, the bags were tied, the bottles were sorted, and the paths were clear. The friends washed their hands at the fountain and walked to the ice cream stand near the gate.

The children gathered around a nearby ice cream stand that used paper napkins and sorted its waste. The owner had watched them clean and gave each child an extra scoop.

As they enjoyed their sweet treats, Lily, Max, Ava, and Sam looked back at the clean paths and open grass. The park already felt easier to play in.

"I had so much fun cleaning up today," said Ava as she licked her chocolate cone.

"Me too," Max said. "It looks like our park again."

Lily smiled. "Next time we should bring our gloves before the game starts."

The children finished their ice creams and put their napkins in the right bin nearby.

With full tummies and tired hands, The City Park Cleanup Crew headed home past clean paths and open grass.

## A Cleaner Weekend

The next weekend, Lily, Max, Ava, and Sam returned with their frisbee and soccer ball. The park looked brighter, and their posters fluttered beside the paths.

"Look," Lily said, pointing toward the slides. "There is only one wrapper today."

Max picked it up with a glove and dropped it into the bin. "That was easy."

Ava smiled when another family stopped to read their recycling poster. "Maybe people noticed."

Sam nodded. "And maybe they can help us keep it clean."

Soon two younger children joined them, carrying a small bag for stray paper scraps. The cleanup no longer felt like a giant job. It felt like a habit the whole park could share.

From then on, the four friends still played in the park every weekend. They also picked up any litter they found along the way, because taking care of their favorite place had become part of the fun.
