## Story

## The Little Kitten

One sunny day in the bustling city, a group of friends were playing outside when they heard a soft meow. They looked around and saw a tiny kitten crouched beside a flowerpot. She was dusty, hungry, and tucked away from the sidewalk.

The friends knew that the kitten needed help finding her way home. They decided to take care of her until they could figure out where she belonged.

With a grown-up nearby, they brought the kitten water and made a cozy bed from an old towel. The little creature tucked her paws under her chest and blinked at them.

As nightfall approached, the friends still did not know where the kitten belonged. They needed a plan.

They searched nearby porches, garden beds, and the sidewalk for clues, but could not find a collar or tag.

"Maybe someone put up a poster," one friend said.

"Or maybe a neighbor saw her before us," said another.

The young detectives kept searching, determined to reunite the kitten with her family.

## Searching for Clues

The group of friends looked at each other with concern. They wanted to find the kitten's home, but they did not know where to start looking. One friend suggested that they split into two groups and search nearby streets.

"Good idea," another friend said. "We will cover more ground that way."

The friends split up into two groups and set off in opposite directions, calling out for anyone who might be missing a little kitten.

As they walked through the streets, the kids kept their eyes peeled for any signs or posters about a missing cat. They checked bushes, stoops, and alley gates for clues about where the kitten belonged.

One group saw a poster on a telephone pole with a picture of a gray kitten.

"This looks like her," one friend said, pointing at it.

The poster had an address, so the children hurried there. But when they arrived, the kitten in the poster was already home. It was a different gray kitten with a white spot on one ear.

"At least we know posters can help," one friend said.

They kept walking until a woman outside a bakery stopped and looked at the kitten. "I saw that little one near the Main Street apartments yesterday," she said. "Someone there was calling for a cat named Fluffy."

The friends thanked her and headed toward Main Street.

## Reuniting with the Family

The friends walked carefully toward the Main Street apartments, taking turns carrying the kitten in the towel. She was calmer now, but every loud bus made her tuck her head down.

Near the apartment entrance, one friend heard a voice calling, "Fluffy, Fluffy, where are you?"

The children looked at one another. Then they hurried toward the voice.

"Is this your cat?" one of them asked.

The woman covered her mouth when she saw the kitten safe in the towel.

"Oh my goodness. Yes. That is my Fluffy," she said, gathering the kitten gently into her arms.

She looked at the children. "Thank you so much," she said. "I have been looking for her all afternoon."

The children smiled, proud and relieved. They waved goodbye to Fluffy before heading back home together.

Whenever these friends saw each other playing outside after that, they remembered the day they followed clues all the way to Fluffy's front door.

## The Kitten Help Squad

The next morning, the friends met near the flowerpot where they had first found Fluffy. The sidewalk looked ordinary again, but the children felt different.

"We should make a note for people who lose pets," one friend said.

"And we can check posters more carefully next time," another added.

They wrote down what had helped: water, a quiet towel, gentle voices, and asking nearby grown-ups for clues. Then they taped the note to the community board.

At the top, they wrote: The Kitten Help Squad.

By lunchtime, someone had drawn a tiny paw print beside the title. The friends grinned. Their city felt a little kinder now.
