## Story

## Welcome to the Neighborhood

The sun shone over the apartment building as a moving truck pulled up to the curb. The children who lived there peered out their windows and watched movers carry furniture and boxes inside.

Then they heard giggling from the sidewalk. A family with two young kids had stopped beside the truck, and one child was bouncing a small red ball.

"Hi," called one of the children from the building. "Welcome to our neighborhood."

The new family smiled back. "Thank you," said their mom. "We are happy to be here too."

The children began showing their new neighbors around, pointing out the park, the corner store, and the best place to buy ice cream nearby.

"The swings are fastest after school," one girl said.

"And the ice cream shop has rainbow sprinkles," another child added.

The new kids smiled at each other. The building already felt a little less new.

## Meeting the New Neighbors

The children in the apartment building had always known each other. They played together every day and shared toys and snacks. When a new family moved in, everyone was curious to meet them.

They gathered around as the moving van pulled up, eager to greet their new neighbors. But as soon as they saw the unfamiliar faces, some of them began to feel nervous.

The new family spoke another language at home and wore clothes the children had not seen before. A few kids hung back near their parents, unsure what to say.

One boy stepped forward and waved. "I am Leo," he said.

The new girl smiled back and said her name too. Leo did not understand every word, but he understood her smile.

Soon more children came out from behind their parents. Someone rolled the red ball across the sidewalk, and the new girl rolled it back. A game began before anyone needed many words.

## Words, Food, and New Games

As the kids spent more time with their new neighbors, they noticed how much they could share, even when some things felt unfamiliar at first.

The children started trading words from their languages. The new family showed them how to say "hello," while the kids taught them how to count to ten in English. Soon everyone was laughing and practicing together.

One afternoon, the new neighbors brought homemade food to share in the courtyard. The children gathered around the table, curious about the warm, spicy smell.

The first dish was called samosas: crispy triangles filled with potatoes and peas. Some of the kids hesitated because they had never tasted them before. Then Leo took a bite.

"It is crunchy," he said. "And warm in the middle."

In return, one of the families brought macaroni and cheese for everyone to try. By the end of the meal, the table was messy, the plates were empty, and the children were asking what they could taste next time.

## Celebrating Together

The kids in the apartment building had become fast friends with their new neighbors. They played in the courtyard most afternoons and kept trading new words.

One day, they were playing outside when one of the new kids told them her family was getting ready for a holiday.

"What kind of holiday is it?" asked one of the children.

"It is called Diwali," replied their new friend. "It is a festival of lights my family celebrates."

The other children listened as their friend explained that Diwali was celebrated with lights, sweets, and time with family.

"Can we help you celebrate?" asked another child.

Their new friend beamed. "Yes, that would be amazing."

The group spent the afternoon preparing together. They made paper lanterns, helped arrange small electric candles around the courtyard, and carried plates of sweets to a long table.

As they worked, they shared stories about favorite holidays, family meals, and funny things that had happened when they were little.

When everything was ready, everyone gathered for a feast with samosas, laddoos, fruit, popcorn, and macaroni and cheese.

After dinner, the children watched from a safe spot while the grown-ups lit sparklers. Tiny lights fizzed against the evening sky while everyone munched popcorn.

As the night wound down, the children helped clean the courtyard. The lanterns glowed in the windows above them, and the new family no longer felt far from home.

## Welcoming New Friends

The children in the apartment building played together almost every day now. They shared snacks, made up sidewalk games, and visited one another's apartments after school.

One day, the kids decided to organize a welcome party for their new friends. They prepared snacks and decorated the community room with colorful streamers and balloons. When everything was ready, they waited by the door.

When the new family arrived, the children ran over to greet them while the parents exchanged warm hellos.

As everyone sat down to eat, Leo raised his hand. "I am glad you moved here," he said.

"Me too," another child added. "Can we play ball after cake?"

In that moment of noisy, happy togetherness, the children saw that their new neighbors were not strangers anymore. They were friends with different stories, favorite foods, and family traditions to share.

The party made the whole building feel warmer, as if every open door led to another place where they belonged.
