## Story

## Losing Teddy

Lily was excited to go on a hike in the woods with her family. She packed water, a snack, a small map, and her favorite teddy bear, Teddy.

Teddy rode in the side pocket of Lily's backpack, where he could see ferns, flowers, and sunlit tree trunks.

At lunchtime, Lily reached for him and froze.

"Teddy is gone," she whispered.

Her parents stopped at once. They checked the picnic blanket, the backpack, and the path nearby.

"We will retrace our steps together," Mum said. "Slowly and carefully."

Somewhere behind them, Teddy lay in a patch of moss beside the path, waiting to be found.

## Teddy's Adventure Begins

A wise old owl named Hootie spotted Teddy from a low branch.

"You look like someone who belongs to a friend," Hootie said.

Teddy could not walk or talk loudly, but the stitched smile on his face looked hopeful. A squirrel named Squeaky scampered over and sniffed the backpack ribbon tied to Teddy's arm.

"I saw a girl with this ribbon near the fern path," Squeaky said.

"Then we know where to begin," said Hootie.

They did not drag Teddy through mud or carry him too high. Squeaky placed him on a broad piece of bark, and two mice helped pull the bark along the safe side of the trail.

## Obstacles Along the Way

The forest path had small challenges. A stream crossed the trail. A fallen branch blocked the mossy shortcut. Rain from the night before had made one slope slippery.

Hootie flew ahead and checked the route. Squeaky chose dry stones near the shallowest part of the stream. The mice waited whenever the bark wobbled.

Near the fallen branch, they heard rustling.

Two young raccoons peeked out. "Is that a toy?"

"A missing friend's toy," said Hootie. "We are taking him back."

The raccoons helped instead of grabbing. They rolled two pinecones under the branch to lift it high enough for the bark sled to slide through.

"Teamwork is more fun than mischief," one raccoon said, sounding surprised.

## The Reunion with Lily

Lily and her family were walking slowly back along the trail, calling Teddy's name and checking each place they had stopped.

At the fern path, Lily saw the bark sled.

"Teddy," she cried, then knelt gently and hugged him close.

Hootie watched from a branch. Squeaky sat on a stump, proud and a little shy.

"Thank you," Lily said to the forest friends. She could not understand every chirp and hoot, but she understood kindness when she saw it.

Mum tied Teddy inside the backpack with a soft loop of ribbon.

"Now he can see the woods and stay secure," Lily said.

## Finding Teddy Together

Back at home, Lily brushed moss from Teddy's paws and set him by the window to dry in the warm light.

She drew a picture of the fern path, the owl, the squirrel, the mice, and the helpful raccoons. Then she taped it inside her hiking notebook.

On their next walk, Teddy rode safely in his ribbon loop. Lily checked the pocket at every rest stop.

When they passed the fern path, Hootie called from the trees, and Squeaky dropped one acorn near Lily's shoe.

"Hello, friends," Lily said.

Teddy's stitched smile looked ready for the next careful adventure.
