## Story

## The Old Castle

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there was an old castle with tall towers and a grand courtyard. People whispered that a playful ghost lived there.

Some children from the village wanted to know if the stories were true, so they asked Mr. Bell, the castle caretaker, to take them on a daytime tour.

"We stay together," Mr. Bell said. "Old castles have loose stones and dim corners."

Inside, the children saw portraits, dusty velvet chairs, and sunlight falling through colored glass. Then a pale shape moved across the wall.

The youngest child held Mr. Bell's sleeve.

"I see him too," Mr. Bell said gently. "Good afternoon, Prince Casper."

## Meeting the Playful Ghost

A silver boy in old-fashioned clothes floated near the fireplace and gave a shy bow.

"I did not mean to frighten you," he said. "I usually tap windows because no one stops to talk."

The children relaxed when they heard his small, gentle voice.

"Do you live here by yourself?" one asked.

"Mostly," said Prince Casper. "I remember games, music, and a blue family ring. I do not remember where everyone went."

He showed them a harmless trick: a feather that danced in the air and landed in a hat. The children laughed, and Casper's glow grew warmer.

## Discovering His Story

The children wanted to know more about their new friend, so they asked careful questions.

"Were you always in the castle?" asked Mina.

"I was a prince here long ago," Casper said. "I remember a winter storm, a locked music room, and my aunt singing by the fire."

Mr. Bell brought out the castle record book. They found a drawing of Prince Casper wearing a blue ring and standing beside a woman named Lady Elowen.

"That name is still in the village records," Mr. Bell said. "Her family may know more."

Casper looked at the page without blinking. "Could we ask them?"

"We can write first," said Mr. Bell. "That is the polite way to begin."

## Searching for Clues

The children helped Mr. Bell search the library table, not the unsafe towers or locked rooms.

They found an old map, a bundle of letters, and a sketch of Lady Elowen's cottage. Mr. Bell wrote to the village historian, and the children drew a copy of Casper's blue ring.

Two days later, a reply arrived. Lady Elowen's great-granddaughter, Miss Rowan, lived near the mill and kept family stories in a cedar box.

The children visited with Mr. Bell. Miss Rowan welcomed them with tea and listened closely.

"My family always wondered what became of the young prince," she said. "We have his songbook."

## The Reunion

Miss Rowan came to the castle the next afternoon with the cedar box tucked under her arm.

When she opened it, Casper's glow trembled. Inside lay a blue ring, a folded ribbon, and a song written in careful ink.

Miss Rowan sang the first line. Casper remembered the second.

The room grew warm, as if the fireplace had woken. Casper smiled through silver tears.

"Someone remembered," he said.

Miss Rowan placed the songbook in the music room, where visitors could read the story of the young prince and his family. Casper no longer tapped windows to scare people. He rang the little music bell when he wanted company.

## Epilogue: Friendship and Courage

The children visited the castle often after that, always with Mr. Bell or another grown-up.

Sometimes Casper showed them feather tricks. Sometimes Miss Rowan sang from the songbook. Sometimes they simply sat in the music room while rain tapped the glass.

The castle still had creaks and long halls, but the children understood it better now.

At the gate, a new sign hung beneath the tour hours:

"Ask for the music room. Prince Casper likes visitors who listen."
