# The Knights with Imaginations

_How Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival Helped a Worried Dragon_

Once upon a time, in a far away land, there lived two brave knights named Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival. They were the best of friends who loved to play and go on adventures together. One day, they heard a loud roar coming from the nearby forest. A dragon was missing something precious, and the knights needed bravery, teamwork, and imagination to help without making the problem bigger.

## Story

## The Dragon's Roar

In a far-off kingdom, there lived two young knights named Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival. They were best friends, and they liked inventing games in the castle courtyard.

One morning, a roar rolled across the forest.

"That sounds upset," said Percival.

"And large," said Lancelot.

They did not rush toward the sound by themselves. They told Captain Mira at the gate, and she brought the dragon keeper's horn.

At the edge of the forest, they saw a green dragon pacing beside a fallen tree. His tail thumped the leaves, and smoke puffed from his nose.

"My moonstone is missing," the dragon cried. "It keeps my cave warm at night."

The knights looked at one another. This was not a contest of strength. It was a mystery.

## The Knights Gather Helpful Tools

Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival returned to the castle, but they did not gather swords. They gathered useful things: chalk, rope, a map, a lantern, and a basket of calm questions.

"A basket of questions?" Captain Mira asked.

"Not a real basket," said Percival, tapping his notebook. "But we need to ask before we guess."

The dragon keeper showed them how to stand where the dragon could see them and how to speak slowly.

"Dragons hear panic as shouting," she said. "Kind voices help."

The knights took steady breaths. They felt brave, but not because they were ready to charge ahead. They felt brave because they were ready to listen.

## The Knights Use Their Imaginations

The dragon's cave was full of shiny things: smooth stones, glass beads, polished shells, and a silver cup someone had once given him as a thank-you gift.

"The moonstone is round and pale," said the dragon. "It glows like sleepy milk."

Lancelot drew a circle in chalk. Percival drew the cave shelves from memory.

"If I were a rolling moonstone," said Percival, "where would I go?"

"Downhill," said Lancelot.

They followed the slope from the cave entrance to a patch of fern. The dragon stayed back so his large feet would not flatten the clues.

"There," said Percival. A pale glow winked beneath the leaves.

The moonstone had rolled into a rabbit tunnel opening and become wedged at the edge.

"We can lift it without digging," said Lancelot. "But we need a tool shaped like a spoon."

## Lifting the Moonstone

The knights built a gentle lever from a flat branch, a smooth stone, and a padded cloth.

"Slowly," said Captain Mira.

"Together," said the dragon keeper.

Lancelot pressed one end. Percival guided the cloth. The moonstone rolled free and settled into the basket with a soft hum.

The dragon lowered his head until his nose nearly touched the grass. "You found it."

"You helped by staying calm," said Percival.

"And by describing it well," said Lancelot.

The dragon carried the moonstone back to his cave and placed it in a safer hollow on the shelf.

## Celebrating with the Kingdom

That evening, the kingdom celebrated in the castle courtyard. The dragon did not come into the crowd, but he watched from the hill where there was plenty of space.

King Arthur thanked the knights for solving the problem without alarming anyone.

"A kingdom is safer when brave people also think carefully," he said.

The cooks made moon-shaped biscuits. The musicians played a slow, warm tune that sounded like a cave becoming cozy again.

Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival pinned their chalk map on the castle wall. It was smudged and crooked, but it showed the exact path from worry to answer.

## An Unusual Kind of Courage

After that day, Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival became known for an unusual kind of courage.

When a cart wheel sank into mud, they imagined the road as a puzzle and built a plank path.

When a goat wandered onto a roof, they imagined what the goat wanted and placed hay beside the safe steps.

When the dragon worried during a thunderstorm, they helped him count the seconds between lightning and thunder from his cave entrance.

Their best ideas usually began with the same words:

"Let us look closely."

"Let us ask kindly."

"Let us think of another way."
