_A Magical Friendship Story of Two Siblings and their New Friends in the Woods_

Jack and Lily are siblings who love to go on adventures together. One day, while walking in the woods with their aunt, they discover an old treehouse that is home to a friendly family of trolls. ## Story

## The Treehouse

Jack and Lily were walking in the woods with their aunt when they noticed an old treehouse tucked between two wide branches. A little lantern glowed in the window.

"Someone lives there," said Lily.

"Then we should not go up without asking," said Aunt Mara.

Jack cupped his hands around his mouth. "Hello up there. May we say good morning?"

The little door opened, and a round face with mossy eyebrows peeked out.

"Good morning," said the face. "I am Grumpo. I look grumpy before breakfast, but I am friendly after toast."

Jack laughed. Lily waved. The treehouse no longer looked abandoned. It looked like a home.

## Making Friends

Grumpo invited them to the foot of the tree, where it was easier to talk. Soon two more trolls appeared: Giggles, who laughed like bubbling soup, and Fuzzball, who carried a basket of pinecones.

"We have never met trolls before," said Jack.

"We have never met children who asked before climbing," said Grumpo. "That is a good start."

The trolls showed them the garden around the roots. There were fairy lamps in bluebells, acorn cupboards for squirrels, and a rain barrel that sang when drops tapped inside it.

Lily admired a small vial on Grumpo's necklace.

"Fairy dust," he explained. "Only for lanterns and missing buttons. It is not for flying unless a grown troll is helping."

Jack nodded. Magic sounded best with rules.

## Playing Together

After Aunt Mara agreed to stay nearby, Jack, Lily, and the trolls spent the afternoon playing around the tree.

The trolls showed Lily how to make flower crowns from fallen petals and bendy grass. Lily showed Fuzzball how to weave a ribbon through the stems so the crown would hold.

Jack loved fishing, so he described how he watched the float instead of splashing the stream. Giggles knew the quietest bend in the creek, and Aunt Mara helped everyone choose a safe place on the bank.

Each friend had something to teach. Each friend had something to learn.

By the time the sun leaned west, the tree roots were covered with crowns, smooth stones, and muddy footprints from a wonderful day.

## Trouble in the Woods

A few days later, Jack and Lily returned with Aunt Mara and found the trolls whispering by the tree.

"Some hikers saw our lantern last night," said Grumpo. "They thought someone strange was hiding here."

Just then, voices came along the path. Three hikers stopped when they saw movement in the treehouse window.

"Who is there?" one called nervously.

Jack stepped beside Aunt Mara. "Friends live here. Please wait on the path while we introduce everyone."

The hikers lowered their walking sticks. The trolls stayed by the roots where everyone could see them clearly.

## Speaking for Their Friends

Lily did not shout. She spoke slowly, the way Aunt Mara did when someone felt unsure.

"This is Grumpo, Giggles, and Fuzzball," she said. "They live here, and the treehouse is their home."

Grumpo gave a small bow. "We did not mean to scare anyone. Our lantern helps us find the door after sunset."

The hikers looked embarrassed.

"We are sorry," said one. "We guessed before we asked."

Fuzzball offered pinecone biscuits from the basket. That helped everyone feel less stiff.

Before the hikers left, Aunt Mara suggested a little sign near the path: "Tree home nearby. Please wave before visiting."

## Meeting the Trolls

The sign made future visits easier.

Children came with grown-ups. Hikers waved from the path. The trolls waved back when they wanted company and closed the little curtains when they needed quiet.

Jack helped Grumpo brush burrs from Fuzzball's hair. Lily helped Giggles sort glowing stones by color. Aunt Mara wrote a list of treehouse rules and pinned it beside the ladder:

Ask first.

Use the ladder with a grown-up nearby.

Respect quiet curtains.

Leave the roots tidy.

The trolls added one more rule in thick green crayon: "Bring stories when you can."

## A Misunderstanding Cleared Up

One evening, everyone gathered beneath the treehouse for cocoa and toasted bread.

The hikers returned with a new lantern shade so the light would glow softly instead of flashing through the leaves. Grumpo loved it.

"Now we look cozy, not mysterious," he said.

"You can be both," said Jack.

Giggles laughed so hard that cocoa nearly spilled from his cup.

The treehouse stayed tucked among the branches, but it was no longer a secret that made people nervous. It was a home with a sign, a warm lantern, and friends who knew how to ask before opening a door.
