## Story

## Betsy's Adventure Begins

Betsy was a curious calf with soft brown ears and a white patch shaped like a little cloud.

She liked watching everything on the farm: hens scratching, sheep marching, horses trotting, and Farmer Rosa sweeping the show ring.

One afternoon, Betsy saw the older animals practicing for the farm show.

Jack the horse stepped around painted poles.

Molly the goat walked between soft barrels.

Daisy the cow followed Farmer Rosa in a careful circle while children clapped from behind the fence.

Betsy watched with wide eyes.

"That looks interesting," she said.

Jack heard her and walked over slowly.

"Hello, Betsy. Would you like to learn?"

Betsy shuffled one hoof in the dust.

"May I? I am smaller than everyone else."

"Small can still be steady," Jack said. "We start with practice, not a crowd."

## Betsy Practices

Farmer Rosa made a beginner path in the quiet corner of the ring.

It had three soft cones, one low painted pole on the ground, and a blue ribbon tied to the fence.

"First, walk beside me," Farmer Rosa said.

Betsy walked.

"Now stop at the cone."

Betsy stopped a little late.

"Good try," said Jack. "Try again."

Betsy tried again.

This time, she stopped beside the cone.

Next, she stepped over the low pole. Her back hoof bumped it, and the pole rolled softly in the dirt.

Betsy's ears drooped.

"I spoiled it."

"You are learning it," Farmer Rosa said. "That is different."

Betsy practiced for short times each day. She rested when she was tired. She drank water. She tried again after lunch.

Little by little, the cones stopped feeling confusing.

The pole stopped feeling too big.

The ribbon stopped feeling strange when it fluttered.

## Betsy's Big Moment

On farm show day, the ring smelled like fresh straw and apple treats.

Betsy waited with Farmer Rosa at the gate.

The older animals were calm, but Betsy's knees felt wobbly.

"What if I forget the path?" she whispered.

Jack lowered his head near hers.

"Look for the first cone. Then the next one. One step at a time."

Farmer Rosa patted Betsy's neck.

"We can walk it together."

That made Betsy breathe easier.

When the gate opened, Betsy walked into the ring beside Farmer Rosa.

She stopped at the first cone.

She turned around the second.

She stepped over the low pole.

Her back hoof brushed it, but she kept moving calmly.

The children clapped.

Betsy reached the blue ribbon and gave one proud little hop.

## A Confident Calf

After the show, Farmer Rosa gave Betsy a red apple slice.

"You remembered the whole path," Molly said.

"You kept going after the pole bumped," Jack added. "That was the best part."

Betsy looked back at the quiet ring.

She had not become confident all at once. She had become confident one careful practice at a time.

The next morning, Betsy walked to the beginner path again.

"More practice?" Jack asked.

Betsy smiled.

"Yes. I want to learn the next step."

And because she knew how to begin, the next step did not feel so far away.
