# Greta's Great Escape

_A Safe Farm Adventure with Friends_

Greta the goat wants to see more of the farm, but a loose latch makes her realize that wandering by herself is not a good adventure. With Cluck, Oink, and Farmer Lee nearby, Greta learns to explore safely, ask for help, and enjoy the best parts of the farm from the right side of the fence.

## Story

## Feeling Restless

Greta the goat pressed her nose against the pasture gate. Beyond it, Farmer Lee was carrying baskets past the apple trees.

"I want to see the orchard," Greta said.

Cluck the chicken scratched in the dust beside her. "I want to see the seed shed."

Oink the pig looked up from his straw. "I want to see lunch."

Greta laughed, but then the gate clicked in the wind. The latch had not fallen all the way down.

The gate opened a finger-width.

Greta took one step forward, then stopped.

"That does not look right," she said.

## The Great Escape

The gap in the gate was wide enough for a curious goat nose. Greta could smell apple leaves and damp grass.

"Should we go?" whispered Cluck.

Greta looked at the open latch. The farm lane was quiet, but it was not their yard.

"No," she said. "If a gate is open, we call Farmer Lee."

Oink blinked. "How do we call him?"

Greta lifted her chin and bleated her biggest bleat.

"Maa-aa-aa."

Cluck added a loud "Bawk." Oink added a helpful "Snort."

Farmer Lee turned from the apple trees. "That sounds important."

He hurried over and closed the latch properly.

"Thank you, Greta," he said. "A loose gate can lead to trouble."

## On The Run

Later that morning, Farmer Lee brought a lead rope and opened the gate himself.

"Would you like a proper walk?" he asked.

Greta's ears perked up. Cluck hopped behind the fence, and Oink waddled to the corner where he could watch.

Farmer Lee led Greta along the safe path beside the pasture. His dog, Patch, walked calmly at his heel.

Greta looked at Patch.

"You are not chasing me," she said.

Patch wagged his tail.

"Patch helps me check gates," Farmer Lee explained. "He is working."

Greta walked a little taller. A farm walk with a grown-up was much nicer than a secret dash through the lane.

## Greta's Plan

At the orchard, Greta saw fallen apples scattered in the grass.

"May I eat one?" she asked.

"One small apple," said Farmer Lee. "The rest go in the basket."

Greta munched carefully. Then she noticed a low branch caught in the fence.

"Maa," she called, pointing with her nose.

Farmer Lee freed the branch and checked the wire. "Good spotting."

When they returned, Greta told Cluck and Oink everything.

"The orchard has apples," she said.

"The seed shed?" asked Cluck.

"Closed," said Greta. "Farmer Lee says chickens do not sort seed packets."

Cluck looked disappointed for one second, then found a beetle and forgot.

## Triumph & Tiredness

The afternoon was warm, and Greta felt sleepy after her walk. Oink had rolled in a shallow muddy patch, and Cluck was busy dust-bathing near the fence.

"Was it exciting?" asked Oink.

"Yes," said Greta. "But the best part was knowing where I was allowed to go."

Patch trotted by with Farmer Lee to check the water troughs. Greta watched the dog work.

"I helped with the gate," she said.

"You did," said Farmer Lee. "That was a useful adventure."

## Safe and Sound in their Pen

At sunset, Farmer Lee checked the latch again. This time it clicked firmly.

"Good night, helpers," he said.

Greta curled beside the hay rack. Cluck settled on her perch. Oink sighed from his straw bed.

"Tomorrow," Greta whispered, "we can explore the pasture corner."

"With the gate closed?" asked Cluck.

"With the gate closed," said Greta.

## A Daring Escape

The next morning, Greta found adventure exactly where she was. A butterfly rested on the fence rail. A new patch of clover grew by the trough. Patch and Farmer Lee waved from the lane.

"There is a lot to see from here," Greta said.

Oink nodded. "And lunch is close."

Cluck scratched a neat circle in the dust. "And if the gate opens?"

Greta lifted her chin.

"We call Farmer Lee."

Then she gave a small practice bleat, to be ready.
