# Lenny and Betsy's Farm Adventure

## Story

## Lenny's Barn Job

Lenny lived on a farm with his parents, his sisters, and a gentle cow named Betsy. Betsy had soft brown eyes and a slow, friendly moo.

One morning Dad clipped a picture checklist to the barn door.

"Would you like a helper job?" Dad asked.

Lenny bounced on his boots. "Yes."

"Your job is to check Betsy's water bucket with me," Dad said. "You do not open gates or feed animals by yourself."

Lenny nodded. "Water check with Dad."

That sounded important and safe.

## The Checklist

The first picture on the checklist was a water bucket. The second was clean straw. The third was a quiet cow face.

Dad pointed to each one.

"Fresh water?" he asked.

Lenny looked into the bucket. "Half full."

"Then we fill it together."

Dad carried the heavy bucket. Lenny held the hose and turned it off when Dad said, "Enough."

Next they checked the straw. Lenny spotted a damp patch near the corner.

"I see wet straw," he said.

"Good noticing," Dad replied. "I will clean that part."

## Betsy Seems Quiet

One afternoon, Betsy did not walk over for her usual hello. She stood in the shade and flicked one ear.

Lenny wanted to cross the fence and hug her, but he remembered the barn rule.

"Mum," he called. "Betsy is quieter than usual."

Mum came right away. She watched Betsy, checked the water, and called the vet to ask for advice.

"Thank you for telling me," Mum said. "Animals cannot use words, so we pay attention."

Lenny stood beside the fence and spoke softly to Betsy until she settled.

## A Good Helper

By the weekend, Betsy was feeling better. The vet had visited, Mum had followed the care notes, and Lenny had kept checking the water picture every day.

Betsy walked to the fence and gave a gentle moo.

"She sounds like herself again," Lenny said.

Dad smiled. "You helped because you noticed and told us."

Lenny touched the checklist. "Can I keep doing the water picture?"

"Yes," said Dad. "Responsible helpers start with one job and do it well."

Lenny stood tall in his boots while Betsy munched hay nearby, calm and comfortable in her clean stall.
