## Story

## Lila's Farm Life

Lila lived on a family farm where mornings smelled like warm hay, damp soil, and toast from the kitchen.

She liked feeding the hens, brushing the pony, and carrying small baskets beside her parents.

One spring morning, Mom and Dad showed Lila a small patch of land near the kitchen garden.

"This can be your vegetable bed," Dad said.

Lila knelt beside the soft earth.

"All mine?"

"Yours to care for," Mom said. "And ours to help with whenever you need us."

Lila smiled. The patch looked small, but it felt important.

## Planting Season

First, they prepared the soil.

Lila picked out pebbles and dropped them into a bucket. Mom loosened the earth with a hand fork. Dad showed Lila how to make straight rows with a piece of string.

They planted carrot seeds, lettuce seeds, and tomato seedlings.

"Seeds need room," Mom said. "Too close together, and they crowd each other."

Lila placed each seed carefully.

Then she watered the rows with her small green watering can.

"Not too much," Dad reminded her. "Plants like a drink, not a flood."

For many days, the soil looked quiet.

Lila visited after school anyway.

She watered.

She waited.

She pulled tiny weeds.

One morning, green shoots poked through the soil.

"They are growing," Lila whispered.

## Summertime on the Farm

Summer made the garden busy.

The tomato plants needed stakes. The lettuce needed shade on hot afternoons. The carrots needed patient weeding because their leaves looked thin and feathery at first.

Lila learned the names of other crops too.

Dad showed her tall corn waving by the fence.

"Corn feeds people and animals," he said.

Mom showed her beans curling up their poles.

"Beans grow upward if we give them something steady," she said.

Lila looked back at her own little garden.

The tomatoes were round and green. The lettuce leaves opened like ruffled fans. The carrot tops swayed whenever the breeze passed.

Her garden did not grow quickly because she wished for it.

It grew because she kept showing up.

## Harvest Season

Autumn arrived with cool mornings and golden light.

Lila helped Mom pick tomatoes from the low vines. She helped Dad gather apples from the ground and from branches he could reach safely.

"No going up branches today," Dad said. "We use the fruit picker for high apples."

Lila held the basket while Dad used the long-handled picker. Plop, plop, plop. Apples landed softly inside.

In the pumpkin patch, Mom showed Lila how to choose pumpkins with strong stems and bright orange skins.

"Pumpkin soup," Mom said.

"And apple pie," Lila added.

At the farmers' market, Lila stood beside her parents while neighbors chose tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, apples, and pumpkins.

"Did you grow these carrots?" one neighbor asked.

Lila nodded.

"I helped them grow."

## Winter Fun in the Kitchen

When winter came, the garden rested under pale frost.

Inside the warm kitchen, Lila washed carrots in a bowl while Mom chopped vegetables with the sharp knife.

"Grown-up knife job," Mom said.

"Careful washing job," Lila said.

Together they made pumpkin soup. Dad rolled pie dough while Lila sprinkled cinnamon over sliced apples.

The kitchen filled with steam, spice, and laughter.

When they sat down to eat, Lila tasted the soup and remembered the tiny seeds she had pressed into spring soil.

"It tastes like the whole year," she said.

Dad smiled. "That is what happens when a garden gets care in every season."

## Growing with Love

That night, Lila sat by the window with a mug of cocoa.

Snow covered the garden patch.

Nothing green showed above the soil, but Lila knew the farm was not empty. Seeds waited in paper packets. Tools rested in the shed. The compost pile warmed quietly under straw.

Spring would come again.

Next time, Lila wanted to plant peas.

Maybe sunflowers too.

Growing food took patience, steady hands, and many small jobs done with love.

Lila was still little, but her care had helped the farm grow.
