## Story

## Introducing Lily the Lamb

Lily was a quiet lamb with soft wool and careful steps. She liked grazing with her family, but she hid behind Mama Sheep whenever new visitors came to the farm.

One morning, Mama Sheep said, "County fair shearing day is next week."

Lily's ears twitched. "Will it be loud?"

"A little," Mama said. "But Farmer Jo will stay with us, and the shearer is gentle and trained."

Lily leaned against Mama. "Can I watch first?"

"Yes," said Mama. "Watching first is a good plan."

## Practice at Home

Farmer Jo helped the flock practice standing on a clean mat. No clippers buzzed. No one rushed.

"Stand, breathe, snack," Farmer Jo said.

Lily stood for three breaths. Then she got a small handful of hay.

The next day, she stood for five breaths. Her legs still felt wobbly, but Mama Sheep stood nearby.

"You do not have to be the brave lamb at the fair," Mama said.

"What should I be?" Lily asked.

"A lamb who can ask for what she needs."

## The County Fair

The fair smelled like straw, apples, and clean wool. Lily watched another sheep meet the shearer.

The shearer spoke softly, moved slowly, and kept the wool in one tidy fleece.

"That was calmer than I thought," Lily said.

Beside her, a young ram named Rowan shuffled his hooves.

"I am nervous too," he whispered.

Lily moved a little closer, leaving space between them. "I am watching first."

"Can I watch with you?" Rowan asked.

"Yes," said Lily.

## Lily's Turn

When it was Lily's turn, Farmer Jo stayed by her head. The shearer checked that Lily was settled before starting.

Buzz, pause. Buzz, pause.

Lily breathed the way she had practiced. When she needed a moment, Farmer Jo said, "Pause, please," and the shearer stopped.

Soon Lily's warm fleece lay folded on the table.

"All done," Farmer Jo said.

Lily felt lighter and cooler.

Rowan went next. Lily stood where he could see her and said, "You can ask for a pause."

Rowan nodded.

## The Friendship Ribbon

At the end of the day, the judge gave ribbons for clean fleece, calm standing, and kind support.

Lily and Rowan received a green ribbon together.

"For helping each other feel ready," the judge said.

Lily did not win the biggest prize, but she liked the green ribbon best. It reminded her of standing beside a new friend and finding her voice one small sentence at a time.
