## Story

## The Missing Mother

Peep was a tiny chick with soft yellow feathers. She lived in a cozy nesting box with Mama Hen and three sleepy siblings.

One afternoon, Peep woke from a nap and lifted her head.

"Mama?" she peeped.

Mama Hen was not in the nesting box. Peep's brothers and sisters were still sleeping in a warm pile.

Peep hopped to the edge of the box. The coop looked much bigger without Mama Hen beside her.

"I will not go far," Peep whispered. "I will look from here."

She listened. Somewhere outside, a hen clucked softly.

## Meeting New Friends

Peep hopped down to the coop doorway and stopped. Bunbun the rabbit was nibbling clover beside the fence.

"Have you seen Mama Hen?" Peep asked.

Bunbun twitched his nose. "I saw her near the water dish. Stay on this side of the fence, little chick."

Peep followed the fence line, keeping the coop behind her. Above the gate, Old Owl blinked in the daylight.

"Hoo," said Owl. "When you feel worried, listen for a sound you know."

Peep stood still.

She heard bees in the lavender, Farmer Mina stacking pails, and a soft cluck from the shade beside the barn.

"That sounds like Mama," said Peep.

Daisy Cow lowered her head over the fence. "I can see her. She is by the feed bin."

## Peep Meets Mama Hen

Peep hurried along the coop path. She did not cross the lane. She did not go behind the tractor. She followed the fence until she reached the feed bin.

"Peep," Mama Hen clucked.

Peep ran under Mama's warm wing.

"I woke up and you were gone," Peep said.

"I was getting grain from Farmer Mina," said Mama Hen. "You did well to stay near the coop."

Bunbun hopped closer. Owl watched from the gate. Daisy Cow flicked her tail.

"Everyone helped," Peep said.

Mama Hen nodded. "Farm friends are good listeners."

## Reunited

Mama Hen led Peep back to the nesting box. Peep's siblings were awake now, chirping for news.

"Where was Mama?" asked Pip.

"By the feed bin," said Peep.

"Was it worrying?" asked Pop.

"A little," said Peep. "Then I listened."

Mama Hen settled down, and all four chicks tucked beneath her feathers.

Outside, Bunbun rustled in the clover. Owl gave one soft hoot. Daisy Cow mooed from the pasture.

Peep knew those sounds now.

She closed her eyes and drifted asleep.
