## Story

## Peppa Follows a Butterfly

Peppa loved the little path behind the farm. It ran beside the apple trees, past the carrot beds, and stopped at the edge of the woods where the grown-ups could still see the gate.

One sunny afternoon, Peppa walked there with her family.

A yellow butterfly dipped over the grass.

Peppa took one step after it.

Then another.

Then three quick steps more.

When she looked up, the butterfly was gone. The apple trees looked different from this side, and the farm gate was hidden behind tall ferns.

Peppa's ears drooped.

"Mama?" she called.

No answer came, only leaves rustling softly.

Peppa remembered the farm rule: if you cannot see your grown-up, stop walking and use your big voice.

So she stayed beside a mossy stump and called again.

"I am here."

## A Helpful Owl

A brown owl blinked from a low branch.

"You sound far from your path," the owl said.

Peppa nodded. "I followed a butterfly and forgot to watch the gate."

"That happens to curious feet," said the owl. "Stay where you are for a moment. I can see the red barn roof from here."

Peppa took a slow breath.

The owl pointed with one wing. "The safe path is beside the little brook. It leads back toward the pasture fence."

"Will you show me?" Peppa asked.

"I will fly above you," said the owl. "Walk slowly where the path is clear."

Peppa followed the path beside the brook. She did not hurry. She watched for roots, puddles, and low branches.

## The Rain Shelter

Gray clouds slid across the sun.

A soft rain began to patter on the leaves.

Near the path stood a small farm shelter with one open side and a dry wooden bench. Farmer Mae used it when she checked the fence in rainy weather.

"Wait here where it is dry," the owl said. "I will call toward the farm."

Peppa sat on the bench and listened.

The rain sounded loud, but the shelter felt safe. Peppa could see the path, the brook, and the owl circling above the trees.

Soon two squirrels scampered down from a branch.

"Are you waiting for your family?" one asked.

"Yes," Peppa said. "I walked farther than I meant to."

"We can help listen," said the other squirrel.

Together they heard a familiar voice.

"Peppa."

Peppa stood up straight. "Mama, I am here."

## A Careful Way Home

Mama Pig and Dad Pig came along the brook path with Peppa's siblings close behind them.

Peppa wanted to run, but the path was wet.

"Slow feet," Mama Pig called gently.

Peppa walked carefully until Mama Pig wrapped her in a warm hug.

"I am sorry," Peppa said. "I followed the butterfly before asking."

"Thank you for stopping and calling," said Dad Pig. "That helped us find you."

The squirrels showed them where the path curved around a patch of prickly brambles. The owl flew ahead until the red barn roof came back into view.

At last, Peppa saw the farm gate.

## Safe and Sound

Everyone was glad to be home.

Peppa drank warm soup at the kitchen table while the rain tapped the window.

"I liked seeing the brook and the owl," Peppa said. "But I did not like being unsure where I was."

"Curiosity is a good thing," said Mama Pig. "It needs a good plan beside it."

Dad Pig nodded. "When you want to explore, ask first. Then someone can come with you."

Peppa looked at her muddy hooves.

"Next time, I will ask."

## What Changed

The next day, Peppa stood by the farm gate and looked toward the woods.

The yellow butterfly fluttered past again.

Peppa smiled, then turned around.

"Mama," she called. "May we walk to the brook together?"

Mama Pig picked up her walking hat.

"That sounds like a fine adventure."

Peppa still loved exploring. Now she loved asking first too.
