## Story

## Porky and Clucky's Adventure

Porky the pig and Clucky the chicken were best friends. Porky liked to sniff interesting smells. Clucky liked to spot interesting things from fence rails.

"We could explore the lane by the sheep meadow," said Porky one sunny afternoon.

"Only as far as the white gate," said Clucky. "That is what Farmer Ana says."

They trotted and hopped along the safe side of the fence. Butterflies dipped over the grass. A tractor hummed far away.

Then they heard a small bleat.

"Baa?"

Porky stopped. Clucky flew onto the low rail.

"Someone sounds worried," she said.

## Meet Porky and Clucky

Porky had a strong nose, but he did not rush into trouble. Clucky had sharp eyes, but she did not fly where Farmer Ana had not allowed.

"We should look from here," said Porky.

Clucky nodded. "And if it is a problem, we call."

Behind the white gate stood a small lamb. Her wool was soft and curly, and her nose trembled.

"I am Woolly," she bleated. "I went around the trough and now I cannot see Mama."

Porky sniffed the ground near the gate. Clucky looked across the meadow.

"Your mama is by the willow tree," Clucky said. "But the gate is closed."

## The Adventure Begins

Porky lifted his snout and gave his loudest oink.

"Oink. Oink."

Clucky added a bright, ringing cluck.

"Bawk-bawk-bawk."

Farmer Ana looked up from the garden. "What have you found?"

She came to the white gate and saw Woolly waiting on the wrong side of the trough.

"Good calling," she said. "Everyone stay calm."

## Finding Woolly's Mother

Farmer Ana opened the gate and stepped into the meadow. Porky and Clucky stayed on the lane, where they belonged.

"This way, Woolly," Farmer Ana said softly.

Woolly followed her around the trough and through a second gate. Her mother lifted her head from the grass.

"Baa," called Woolly.

The ewe hurried over and nuzzled her lamb.

Porky wiggled with happiness.

"We found the right grown-up," he said.

"And the right gate," said Clucky.

## Porky and Clucky Help

After Woolly was safe, Farmer Ana checked the meadow fence.

"Here is the trouble," she said. "The trough blocked Woolly's view of the flock."

She moved the trough a little closer to the fence, where the lambs could see around it.

Porky sniffed the new spot. "Better."

Clucky hopped onto the rail. "I can see Woolly and her mama now."

Farmer Ana scratched Porky behind one ear and scattered a few grains for Clucky.

"Farm helpers need snacks," she said.

## Friendship

On the way home, Porky and Clucky passed the duck pond. A duckling peeped from behind a tuft of grass beside the path.

"Peep," said the duckling.

"Another little one," said Porky.

This time Clucky knew exactly what to do. She clucked toward the pond, and Mother Duck waddled over at once.

The duckling hurried back to the line of ducks.

Porky smiled. "We are getting good at calling families."

"We are getting good at staying out of the pond too," said Clucky.

## Porky and Clucky: Best Friends Forever

By late afternoon, Porky was tired and Clucky's feet were dusty. They rested under the shade of the white gate.

"You smelled Woolly," said Clucky.

"You spotted her mama," said Porky.

"Farmer Ana opened the gate," said Clucky.

Porky nodded. "That was the most important part."

They sat quietly for a while, listening to Woolly bleat beside her mother in the meadow.

## Friends Stick Together

When the sun began to sink, Farmer Ana called, "Home time."

Porky trotted toward his pen. Clucky fluttered beside him.

"Tomorrow," said Porky, "we can explore the carrot patch fence."

"Only as far as Farmer Ana says," said Clucky.

"Only that far," Porky agreed.

They bumped shoulder to wing and went home for supper, already planning a sensible adventure.
