## Story

## Sparky's Big Dream

Sparky was a friendly pony with a white star on his forehead and fast little hooves. Each morning he galloped across the meadow, tossed his mane, and made the grass bend in the wind.

One afternoon, Mrs. Smith led him past the riding ring. Bright flags fluttered along the fence.

"Next month there is a gentle horse show in town," she said. "Would you like to try a walking and trotting class?"

Sparky pricked up his ears. A show sounded exciting. It also sounded busy.

"Can I run fast?" he asked.

Mrs. Smith smiled and stroked his neck. "At this show, the best ride is a careful ride. We will practice listening first."

## Quiet Lessons in the Ring

Mrs. Smith began with quiet lessons in the ring. She clicked her tongue for walk, lifted the lead rope for trot, and said, "Whoa," when it was time to stop.

At first, Sparky wanted to bounce sideways toward every interesting sound. A robin hopped near the fence. A bucket clanged by the barn. Pepper the horse whinnied from his stall.

"One thing at a time," Mrs. Smith said. "Walk with me."

Sparky took three steady steps.

"Good pony," Mrs. Smith said.

Three steps became six. Six steps became a whole circle. By the end of the week, Sparky could walk, trot, stop, and stand while Mrs. Smith counted slowly beside him.

The chickens watched from the fence rail.

"He is not racing," clucked Dot.

"No," said Pepper. "He is listening."

## Sparky's Setbacks and Challenges

One windy morning, a blue tarp snapped beside the gate. Sparky jumped back and snorted.

"That was loud," Mrs. Smith said. She did not pull him forward. She stood still and let him breathe.

Sparky's legs trembled.

"We can look from here," she told him.

The tarp flapped again. Sparky watched it. It did not chase him. It did not bite. It only made a crinkly sound in the wind.

Mrs. Smith moved one step closer. Sparky followed. Then another step. When they reached the gate, Mrs. Smith folded the tarp and set it safely away.

The next day, she hung a small ribbon on the fence. It fluttered softly.

"Hello, ribbon," Sparky said with a little snort.

By the end of practice, he could trot past it without hurrying.

## Sparky Shines in the Horse Show

The show day arrived with brushed tails, clean boots, and rows of ponies waiting beside the ring. Mrs. Smith checked Sparky's bridle, patted his shoulder, and led him to the gate.

"Stay with me," she said.

Sparky walked into the ring. People clapped. A baby laughed. Somewhere behind him, a flag snapped in the breeze.

Sparky's ears flicked back toward Mrs. Smith.

"Walk on," she said.

He walked. When she asked for a trot, he trotted. When she asked him to halt, he stopped with all four hooves square beneath him.

During the final circle, Sparky noticed the bright flags. They fluttered like the practice ribbon.

"I know that sound," he thought, and kept his steps even.

Mrs. Smith's hand rested warm on the lead rope. Sparky lifted his head and trotted proudly beside her.

## Sparky's First Ribbon

Sparky did not win a blue ribbon that day. He did receive a green one for a calm first show.

Mrs. Smith tied it gently to his stall door.

"You listened beautifully," she said.

Sparky touched the ribbon with his nose. It rustled softly.

Pepper leaned over the stall wall. "Did you like the show?"

"I liked the part where I knew what to do," Sparky said. "And I liked when Mrs. Smith walked beside me."

That evening, Sparky did not race around the meadow. He walked one neat circle, stopped by the fence, and waited while the sunset turned the barn windows gold.

"Whoa," he whispered to himself.

Then he shook his mane, gave one happy little trot, and followed Mrs. Smith home for supper.
