## Story

## The Living Scarecrow

In the middle of the cornfield stood a friendly scarecrow with a patched hat and a blue scarf. During the day, he watched the rows sway in the wind.

At night, when the moon rose over the barn, the scarecrow stretched his straw arms.

"Good evening, farm," he whispered.

Mole peeked from a tunnel. Rabbit hopped near the fence. Owl blinked from the old oak.

"Where are you going?" Rabbit asked.

"Only as far as the moonlit path," said the scarecrow. "Would you like to come?"

## The Moonlit Path

The friends walked between the fields where the path was smooth and pale. The scarecrow held his scarf so everyone could follow it.

"We do not cross the tractor lane at night," he said.

"Why not?" asked Mole.

"Because quiet machines can still be hard to see."

They stayed by the fence and listened. Crickets chirped in the grass. The wheat made a soft brushing sound. Owl showed them where field mice had made tiny trails under the leaves.

"The farm sounds different at night," Rabbit said.

## The Orchard

In the apple orchard, the scarecrow stopped under a low branch. A ripe apple had already fallen to the ground.

"May we eat it?" Rabbit asked.

"Fallen fruit is for sharing," said Owl.

Mole sniffed it first. Rabbit took a nibble. The scarecrow did not eat, but he liked watching his friends enjoy the sweet smell.

Fireflies blinked near the pumpkin patch beyond the fence.

"Stars in the grass," Mole said.

"Almost," said the scarecrow.

## The Pond Song

The moonlit path ended at a small pond. Frogs sang from the reeds, and the water shone like a piece of sky.

The friends sat back from the edge. No one splashed. No one leaned too far.

"The pond has its own bedtime song," Rabbit whispered.

The scarecrow listened until the moon slipped behind a cloud.

"Time to return," he said.

## Back by Sunrise

The scarecrow led everyone home before the first rooster crowed. Mole slipped into his tunnel. Rabbit tucked under the hedge. Owl flew to the oak.

"Thank you for showing us the farm at night," Rabbit said.

"Thank you for staying on the path," said the scarecrow.

Then he stepped back onto his post and stood still as the sky turned pink.

By morning, he looked like an ordinary scarecrow again, except for one apple leaf tucked gently into his scarf.
