## Story

## The Storm

Rain swept over the farm after lunch. Cow, Horse, Sheep, Goat, and the chickens hurried into the barn and listened to the drops tap the roof.

Then Goat heard a plink.

A drop landed in the hay.

"Roof drip," Goat said.

Another drop landed beside the feed bin.

Cow looked toward the farmhouse. "Farmer Lee needs to know."

Horse gave one loud neigh. The chickens clucked from the dry corner until Farmer Lee opened the barn door.

## The Safe Plan

Farmer Lee looked up at the roof from the ground. "A panel is loose. I will call Mara to help with the ladder."

"Can we fix it?" asked Goat.

"You can help by staying away from tools," Farmer Lee said. "Tools and ladders are for grown-ups."

That was a job the animals could do.

Cow moved to the dry stall. Sheep nudged the clean straw away from the drip. The chickens settled on their roost. Horse stood calmly so the younger animals would not worry.

## Waiting Together

Mara arrived with a toolbox. Farmer Lee and Mara worked outside while the animals stayed behind the gate.

Hammer tap. Ladder step. Rain drip.

Goat wanted to peek, but Sheep blocked the gate gently.

"We were asked to stay back," Sheep said.

Goat sighed. "Right."

The chickens made a quiet game of counting hammer taps. Horse hummed a low barn song. Soon the tapping stopped.

## Dry Again

Farmer Lee came inside and checked the hay.

"Roof is fixed," he said. "Thank you for keeping calm."

Mara spread fresh straw in the corner that had gotten wet. Cow inspected the dry stall. Goat looked up and waited.

No plink.

"Good roof," Goat said.

That night, the barn smelled like fresh straw and rain-washed wood. The animals slept close enough to hear one another breathing, glad that everyone had done the right kind of helping.
