## Story

## A Busy Morning on the Farm

The sun rose over Mama and Papa's farm. The chickens clucked in their coop, Bessie the cow chewed hay in the barn, and little Jimmy carried a small scoop of chicken feed.

"Stay beside me," Mama said.

"I will," Jimmy replied.

Mama opened the coop door. Jimmy sprinkled feed in the tray while Mama collected eggs.

Papa checked Bessie's water and latched the pasture gate behind him. The latch clicked, but not quite all the way.

## The Open Gate

After breakfast, Jimmy saw the pasture gate swinging in the wind. Bessie stood near it, looking at the long green lane.

Jimmy wanted to run and push the gate shut, but Bessie was much bigger than he was.

"Mama, Papa," he called. "The pasture gate is open."

Mama came from the coop. Papa came from the barn.

"Good calling," Papa said. "Stand by the porch, please."

Jimmy hurried to the porch where he could see everything without being in the way.

## Calm Voices

Papa picked up a bucket with a little feed inside. Mama walked slowly behind Bessie, leaving plenty of room.

"Come on, girl," Papa said in his quiet barn voice.

Bessie knew that voice. She followed the bucket back through the gate. Mama closed it, and Papa pressed the latch until it clicked firmly.

"Now tug test," Mama said.

Papa tugged the gate. It stayed shut.

Jimmy clapped once from the porch.

## The New Chore

At lunch, Papa drew a small picture of a gate on Jimmy's chore card.

"Your new job is looking, not fixing," Papa said. "If a gate looks wrong, tell a grown-up."

Jimmy traced the picture with his finger. "Look, call, wait."

"Exactly," said Mama.

That evening, Jimmy walked with Papa to check the latch again. The gate was closed, Bessie was safe, and Jimmy felt proud of the job he could do.
