# The Harvest Helpers

_A Farmyard Tale of Teamwork and Cooperation_

Harvest morning gets tricky when Farmer John's tractor will not start. While the mechanic checks the machine, the animals help with the jobs they can do safely: finding fallen apples, carrying small seed packets, and keeping the yard tidy. By evening, the farm has enough gathered for a simple harvest supper.

## Story

## The Harvest Begins

Harvest morning smelled like apples, hay, and warm soil. Farmer John opened the barn doors and looked across the fields.

"Today we bring in what is ready," he said.

The chickens clucked near the gate. The goats watched from their pen. Pepper the horse stamped one hoof as if he was ready for a parade.

Farmer John got onto the tractor and turned the key.

Click.

He tried again.

Click.

"That is not the sound we need," he said.

He got down, set the brake, and called the mechanic. "No one touches the tractor until it is fixed," he told the animals. "But there are still safe jobs we can do close to the barn."

## Chickens in Action

The chickens liked jobs that involved looking closely. Farmer John opened the orchard gate and pointed to the grass beneath the apple trees.

"Please show me the good apples that have fallen," he said. "I will pick them up."

Dot pecked beside a red apple.

"Here," she clucked.

Pip scratched leaves away from two yellow apples.

"Here too," she called.

Farmer John checked each apple and placed the good ones in a basket. Bruised apples went into a separate pail for compost.

The chickens were proud of their sharp eyes. They did not need to lift heavy things to be helpful.

## Goats to the Rescue

Next, Farmer John brought the goats to the edge of the empty vegetable bed. A patch of weeds had grown along the fence where no crops were planted.

"This part is safe for nibbling," he said. "Not the bean rows. Not the tomato vines. Just this weedy strip."

The goats understood the fence line. Mabel took one mouthful. Gus took another. Soon the strip looked neat again.

Pepper watched from the lane.

"I could help," he said.

"You can," said Farmer John. "Stand calmly while I load the cart."

Pepper stood still while Farmer John stacked light baskets of squash in the small cart. Then Pepper walked slowly to the barn, one careful step at a time.

## The Pigs' Special Skills

The pigs had a different job. Farmer John gave them the empty patch beside the compost heap, where the soil was soft and safe to turn.

"You may root here," he said.

The pigs snuffled and pushed the loose soil with their noses. Worms wriggled lower underground. Leaves mixed into the dirt.

"This will rest for spring planting," Farmer John said.

The pigs grunted happily. A job with mud was their favorite kind of job.

By lunchtime, the mechanic arrived and opened the tractor hood. The animals watched from behind the fence while the grown-ups worked.

"Is it fixed?" called Dot.

"Almost," Farmer John said. "And you have already helped with half the yard."

## The Big Feast

By evening, the tractor was running again. Farmer John used it for the heavy field work, and the animals stayed near the barn where their own jobs were done.

There were baskets of apples, squash, and carrots lined up by the kitchen door. Farmer John made a harvest supper with apple slices, warm vegetable stew, and fresh bread.

The animals had their own supper too: hay for the goats and Pepper, grain for the chickens, and a pan of vegetable scraps for the pigs.

"To the harvest helpers," Farmer John said, raising his mug.

Dot fluffed her feathers. Mabel chewed thoughtfully. Pepper gave a polite nicker.

## The Barn Settles Down

After supper, Farmer John swept the barn while the animals settled down.

"The tractor did the tractor jobs," he said. "The mechanic did the fixing job. And each of you did a farmyard job that fit you."

The chickens tucked their heads under their wings. The goats leaned against the clean fence. The pigs curled in the straw, still smelling faintly of good mud.

Outside, the repaired tractor rested quietly under the stars. Inside, the barn was warm, full, and peaceful after a busy harvest day.
