## Story

## The Chickens Wander Too Far

On a bright morning, Dot, Poppy, and Bean scratched near the coop for seeds. A line of ants marched past the gate, and the three chickens followed it across the yard.

The ants went under the bean plants. Dot, Poppy, and Bean went around the bean plants. Then a beetle hurried under the pumpkin leaves, and the chickens followed that too.

At last Dot lifted her head.

"Where is the coop?" she clucked.

Poppy turned in a circle. Bean looked behind a watering can.

They could see the pumpkin patch, the herb pots, and Farmer Mae's blue wheelbarrow, but they could not see their red coop.

"Stay close," Dot said. "We will not run in three different directions."

## Determined Chickens Begin Their Walk

The chickens stood still and listened. From far away came a soft creak.

"That sounds like the barn door," said Poppy.

"The coop is near the barn," said Bean.

They walked toward the sound in a neat line. Dot went first, Poppy stayed in the middle, and Bean followed behind. They passed the parsley bed and the tall sunflowers.

Then Bean stopped.

"I remember those sunflowers," he said. "We see them from our fence."

The chickens felt better. They were not home yet, but they had found something they knew.

## The Shallow Ditch

After the sunflowers, the chickens reached a shallow rain ditch. It was not wide, but the mud at the bottom looked sticky.

"I do not want muddy toes," said Poppy.

"Look," said Dot. "There is a plank where Farmer Mae walks across."

The plank was wide and dry. Dot stepped onto it slowly. Poppy followed. Bean waited until Poppy was safely across, then crossed too.

No one hurried. No one pushed.

On the other side, they shook their feathers and kept going.

## Facing Challenges Along the Way

The path curved behind a stack of hay bales. The chickens could hear the barn door more clearly now, but the bales blocked their view.

Bean flapped his wings. "Should we go over?"

Dot looked up at the tall stack. "Too high."

Poppy noticed a strip of shade beside the bales. "There is space around the edge."

The chickens squeezed through one at a time. Halfway around, they found a feather caught on a nail in the fence.

"That is one of Ruby's feathers," said Dot.

Ruby lived in their coop. The chickens were getting close.

## The Chickens Brave the Obstacles

The hens walked beside the fence until they heard a familiar voice.

"Chick, chick, chick," called Farmer Mae.

Dot answered with her loudest cluck.

Farmer Mae came around the corner carrying a scoop of grain. "There you are," she said. "You found the garden path."

She did not chase them. She sprinkled a little grain on the path and walked slowly toward the coop.

Dot, Poppy, and Bean followed the trail, pecking as they went.

## Reuniting with Loved Ones

The red coop came into view beside the barn. Ruby, Goldie, and the other hens rushed to the fence.

"Where did you go?" Ruby clucked.

"Past the pumpkins," said Bean.

"Around the hay bales," said Poppy.

"And back by the garden path," said Dot.

Farmer Mae closed the coop gate after everyone was inside. The chickens settled into the straw, tired and safe.

That evening, when the ants marched past the fence again, Dot watched them for a moment.

"Interesting," she clucked.

Then she turned back toward the coop, where supper was waiting.
