## Story

## Springtime on the Farm

Spring came softly to the farm. Grass brightened in the fields. Apple buds opened near the gate. Bees moved from flower to flower in the warm air.

Farmer Milo began each morning with a quiet walk.

He checked the water bowls. He checked the gates. He checked the nesting boxes and the straw beds.

"Spring means new babies," he said to Henrietta Hen. "New babies need calm care."

Henrietta clucked as if she agreed.

## Baby Chicks and Lambs

The first spring surprise came from the chicken coop. A tiny peep rose from the straw.

Farmer Milo opened the door slowly. Under Henrietta's feathers, a yellow chick blinked at the light. More eggs rocked gently beside it.

"Welcome, little one," Farmer Milo whispered.

He left the chick with its mother and made sure the coop was warm and dry.

In the sheep meadow, two lambs practiced standing on wobbly legs. Their mother nudged them close whenever they stepped too far.

The farm felt full of small sounds: peeps, bleats, rustling straw, and soft footsteps.

## Unexpected Early Arrival

Later that week, Farmer Milo found three piglets curled near their mother earlier than expected. They were small and chilly, so he moved slowly and called the farm helper.

No illustration.

"We will warm them first," he said.

He placed the piglets in a clean box with soft towels and set the box near a safe warming pad. Their mother pig rested nearby where she could smell and hear them.

Farmer Milo checked each piglet, then helped them return to their mother when they were ready to feed.

Henrietta Hen watched from the coop doorway.

"Cluck, cluck," she said softly.

"Yes," Farmer Milo said. "Quiet company helps too."

## A Friendly Chicken Helps

Henrietta could not feed piglets, but she could help keep the farm calm.

Whenever Farmer Milo checked the piglets, Henrietta settled nearby with her chicks and made gentle clucking sounds. The chicks stayed close under her feathers. The piglets curled near their mother in fresh straw.

The ducks waddled past without splashing. The lambs played in the next meadow instead of crowding the pen. Bessie Cow stood by the gate and kept curious noses back.

Everyone had a small job.

"That is farm care," Farmer Milo said. "Small jobs done gently."

By evening, the piglets were warm, fed, and sleeping in a soft pile beside their mother.

## A Litter of Bouncy Kittens

The next surprise came from the hay barn. Farmer Milo heard tiny mews from a clean crate tucked beside the wall.

Mittens the barn cat had four kittens: two black kittens with white paws, one gray tabby, and one orange kitten with stripes.

Farmer Milo smiled and gave Mittens space.

"Visitors may look from here," he told the animals. "Kittens need quiet."

The chickens peered from the doorway. Bessie Cow lowered her head from a careful distance. The lambs stood on tiptoe, then tiptoed away again.

Mittens washed each kitten's ears while the farm watched politely.

## Springtime Surprises

By the end of the week, the farm had chicks in the coop, lambs in the meadow, piglets in the straw, and kittens in the hay barn.

Farmer Milo made one more evening round. Henrietta tucked her chicks close. The mother pig grunted softly to her piglets. Mittens curled around her kittens. The ewe rested beside her lambs.

"Spring brings surprises," Farmer Milo said. "And every surprise needs patience."

The animals had learned the same thing. Some helped by staying quiet. Some helped by giving space. Some helped by watching gates and keeping paths clear.

Under the pink spring sky, the whole farm settled into a gentle hush, full of new life and careful kindness.
