## Story

## The Great Farm Race

Farmer Joe liked making ordinary days feel special. One Saturday, he tied bright ribbons to the fence posts and painted a sign for the yard.

The sign read: The Great Farm Race.

Daisy Cow came with her calf. Henny Hen fluffed her feathers. Baa Sheep stretched her woolly legs. Saddle Horse pawed the ground with quiet excitement. Piggie Pig practiced three neat hops over a line of straw.

"This is a friendly race," Farmer Joe said. "The path stays inside the farmyard. If anyone needs help, we stop and help."

The animals nodded. A fair race sounded like a good race.

## The Starting Line

Farmer Joe drew a chalk line near the barn. Everyone stood behind it with plenty of space.

"Ready," Farmer Joe called.

Daisy lowered her head. Henny lifted one foot. Piggie wiggled his snout.

"Set."

Baa Sheep took a slow breath.

Farmer Joe clapped once.

The animals started down the path. Piggie bounced ahead, Henny trotted beside the fence, and Saddle Horse kept a steady pace. Daisy stayed near her calf so the little one would not feel hurried.

At the first turn, Piggie looked back and saw everyone smiling.

"This race sounds cheerful," he said.

## Muddy Path

The first challenge was a shallow muddy patch marked with blue flags. Farmer Joe had checked it that morning and set stepping boards across the middle.

Piggie hopped right through the mud and laughed at the splashes. Henny used the boards. Saddle Horse stepped around the edge.

Baa Sheep placed one hoof on a board, then paused.

"My wool feels wobbly," she said.

Daisy stopped beside her. "Try one board at a time. I will wait."

Baa Sheep took one step, then another. Everyone clapped their hooves, wings, and trotters when she reached the dry grass.

"Thank you for waiting," Baa Sheep said.

"Friends can race and wait," Daisy replied.

## Surprising Turns

The race path curved past the duck pond. Farmer Joe had placed yellow cones to show the safe way around it.

The ducks waddled near the cones to watch. Henny slowed down so she would not bump them.

"Good racing has room for watchers," she said.

Next came the hay-bale turn. Saddle Horse reached it first, but the turn was narrow. He waited for Daisy and her calf to pass before trotting on.

"That was fair," Farmer Joe called.

Near the garden gate, Piggie found a basket of pretend apples. Each racer had to carry one apple to the next post. Piggie balanced his on his head. Baa Sheep tucked hers gently under her chin. Henny rolled hers with her beak.

The race became slower, sillier, and better.

## Finish Line Cheers

At the final stretch, the animals could see the ribbon between two posts.

Piggie was close to the front, but he noticed Baa Sheep's apple slipping.

"Pause," Piggie called. "Apple wobble."

He nudged the apple back into place. Baa Sheep smiled, and they crossed the line together behind Saddle Horse.

Farmer Joe handed out ribbons. Saddle Horse received the first-place ribbon. Piggie received a helper ribbon. Baa Sheep received a steady-steps ribbon. Henny received a careful-watcher ribbon. Daisy and her calf received a stay-together ribbon.

"There are many ways to do well," Farmer Joe said.

The animals agreed.

## At the Finish Line

After the race, everyone rested in the shade with cool water and oat cakes.

They talked about the mud boards, the duck pond, the apple basket, and the friends who waited.

"I liked going fast," Saddle Horse said.

"I liked being careful," Henny said.

"I liked finishing with help," Baa Sheep said.

The Great Farm Race became a favorite farm tradition. It was not only about who crossed first. It was about moving fairly, noticing friends, and cheering for every good effort along the way.
