## Story

## Meet the Playful Pigs

Four young pigs lived beside the vegetable patch. Pip, Poppy, Puddle, and Patch loved mud races, silly songs, and quick surprises.

At first, the other animals laughed when the pigs made funny faces through the fence. Then the pigs began surprising friends who had not agreed to play.

They oinked beside resting cows. They splashed mud near clean hooves. One morning, they moved Mrs. Hen's straw basket to the other side of the coop.

Mrs. Hen found the basket and sighed.

"A joke should not make work harder," she said.

The pigs looked at each other. They had been watching for giggles, not sighs.

## The Farm Talks

That afternoon, the animals gathered near the fence. Mrs. Cow stood in front with Mrs. Hen, Mr. Goat, and Baa Sheep.

"We need to talk," Mrs. Cow said.

The pigs shuffled their muddy feet.

"When you oink beside me while I rest, my body jumps," Mrs. Cow said. "That does not feel like play."

"When you move my basket, I worry that something has gone wrong," Mrs. Hen said.

"We thought everyone liked surprises," Pip said softly.

"Some surprises are fun," Baa Sheep said. "Some surprises feel upsetting."

Patch lowered his snout. "How do we know the difference?"

"Ask," Mrs. Hen said. "A game is a game when everyone wants to play."

The pigs repeated the words together. "Ask first."

## Owl's Advice

The pigs sat under the old oak tree and thought about the farm talk. Owl opened one golden eye from the branch above them.

"Heavy thoughts for small pigs," Owl said.

"We made our friends upset," Poppy said.

"Then you have a chance to mend," Owl replied.

"How?" asked Puddle.

"Name what happened. Say sorry. Repair what you can. Then choose better next time."

The pigs liked having steps. Steps felt easier than guessing.

"Name it," Pip said.

"Say sorry," Poppy added.

"Repair it," Puddle said.

"Choose better," Patch finished.

## The Teapot

The next morning, the pigs practiced walking slowly past the coop. They were doing well until Puddle tripped over his own feet and bumped Mrs. Hen's small tea table.

Her yellow teapot tipped onto the straw and cracked.

The pigs froze.

Mrs. Hen looked at the cracked teapot, then at the pigs.

Pip took a breath. "We bumped your table and cracked your teapot."

Poppy stepped forward. "We are sorry."

"We would like to repair what we can," Puddle said.

Farmer Brown helped them choose a plain teapot from the shed. The pigs washed their hooves, painted yellow flowers on it, and set it beside Mrs. Hen's table.

"The old one mattered to you," Patch said. "This one is not the same, but we made it with care."

Mrs. Hen touched the painted flowers.

"Thank you," she said. "That apology helped."

## Better Games

The pigs still loved games. Now they began each game with a question.

"Tag by the barn?" they asked the goats.

"Mud race after chores?" they asked the ducks.

"Quiet puppet show for the chicks?" they asked Mrs. Hen.

Sometimes friends said yes. Sometimes friends said no. The pigs treated both answers with respect.

One breezy afternoon, loose corn husks blew across the yard. The pigs wanted to dash and squeal, but Pip remembered Owl's steps.

"Can our running help gather the husks?" he asked Farmer Brown.

"It can," said Farmer Brown. "Start near the fence and keep the gate closed."

The pigs ran in neat loops, pushed the husks into a pile, and made the whole farm laugh for the right reason.

## The Kinder Kind of Fun

At the spring picnic, the pigs passed plates, poured lemonade, and performed a puppet show with clean socks.

Mrs. Cow relaxed beside them. Mrs. Hen placed her painted teapot in the middle of the blanket.

"You found a kinder kind of fun," Farmer Brown said.

Patch grinned. "It works better when everyone is laughing for real."

From then on, the pigs were still playful, still muddy, and still full of ideas. But they asked first, repaired mistakes, and used their busy snouts to make the farm brighter.
