## Story

## Welcome to the Farm

On a bright farm surrounded by green fields, Cow, Goat, Piglet, and Rooster spent most days close to home.

Cow knew the clover meadow. Goat knew the fence posts worth scratching. Piglet knew the coolest mud. Rooster knew exactly when the sun would rise.

"Do all farms work like ours?" Piglet asked one afternoon.

"Surely not," Goat said. "Some places must be hotter, colder, wetter, or steeper."

Rooster hopped onto the gate. "Then we should learn."

Their farmer, Mr. Hale, smiled when he heard them. He was preparing to visit farms where his friends lived in other countries.

"You may come," he said, "if you listen carefully and help where you can."

## The Adventure Begins

The friends packed sensibly: apples for Cow, crisp leaves for Goat, grain cakes for Rooster, and a small lunch tin for Piglet.

They rode in Mr. Hale's tidy farm truck to the station, then traveled onward by train and boat. Through windows and railings, they saw fields changing shape: flat, terraced, snowy, dry, green, and golden.

"That field climbs a hill," Goat said.

"That one is full of water," Cow said.

"And that one has rows so straight they look drawn with a ruler," Rooster added.

Piglet pressed his snout to the window. "I thought farms were only farms."

Mr. Hale shook his head. "Farms grow from the land, the weather, and the people who care for them. You will see."

## Meeting the Water Buffalo in Asia

Their first stop was a rice farm where water shone between the rows like mirrors. A water buffalo named Bima pulled a plow through the soft field while his farmer guided him with quiet words.

Cow watched with respect. "The ground is so wet. Do you ever sink in?"

"Not when we move slowly," Bima said. "My farmer knows where to step, and I know how to pull. We work as partners."

Goat helped carry seed bundles along the dry edge of the field. Rooster called when a bundle slipped. Piglet fetched a basket that had floated away.

At lunch, the farmer shared vegetables from the garden and told Mr. Hale how the rice field needed both water and patient timing.

"Our farm is drier," Cow said, "so we do things differently."

"Different land teaches different work," Bima said.

## Visiting Sheep in Europe

Next they visited a hillside sheep farm. Bells rang softly as the flock moved across the grass, and a sheep named Dolly welcomed them by the gate.

The sheep were being sheared for wool. Piglet looked worried when the clippers buzzed.

"It does not hurt," Dolly said kindly. "It keeps us cooler and cleaner. Our wool will be washed, spun, and made into warm clothes."

Goat touched a soft tuft that had fallen onto the clean mat. "This becomes a sweater?"

"Or socks, blankets, and hats," Dolly said. "But good wool starts with good care."

Rooster noticed the shepherd checking each sheep's feet before letting it return to the field.

"You do not rush," he said.

"Care is part of the work," the shepherd replied.

The travelers thanked Dolly and carried that sentence with them.

## Discovering Different Cultures

Every stop taught them something beyond farming.

On one farm, music played while families sorted grain together. Goat tapped his hooves to the rhythm until everyone laughed and showed him the steps.

On another, they tasted noodles, rice cakes, and vegetables prepared in ways they had never smelled before. Piglet learned to wait until the host invited everyone to begin.

In a snowy valley, Cow watched farmers store hay carefully for the cold months. Rooster saw how short winter days changed when animals were fed and brought inside.

They heard different languages, saw different tools, and learned different greetings. Sometimes they did not understand at first. When that happened, they watched, listened, and asked polite questions.

"I like asking better than pretending I know," Piglet said.

"It gets better answers," Rooster agreed.

## The Homecoming

When the travelers returned, Maple Hill Farm looked familiar and new at the same time.

Cow noticed where the pasture stayed damp after rain. Goat noticed which hill path would be safer with stones. Rooster noticed that visitors might have different morning routines. Piglet noticed that new foods did not have to be strange forever.

That evening, they shared stories in the barn.

"Bima and his farmer move through water together," Cow said.

"Dolly said care is part of the work," Goat added.

"And I learned to ask before I sniff the food," Piglet said.

Everyone laughed, but they understood.

After their travels, unfamiliar ideas did not make the farm animals pull away. They leaned closer, listened longer, and remembered that every place had its own weather, work, songs, and wisdom.
