## Story

## The Missing Scarecrow

Farmer Joe stepped onto the porch with his morning tea and stopped so quickly that the spoon rattled in the cup.

The scarecrow was gone.

Its hat, coat, and straw arms had stood in the vegetable field every day, keeping hungry birds away from the peas and lettuce. Now only a wooden post leaned in the soil.

Daisy the cow lowered her head. "Moo?"

"I do not know where it went," Farmer Joe said, "but we need it back before the crows notice."

Peppa the pig sniffed the empty patch. A few bits of straw lay in the dirt, and one sleeve button glittered near the fence.

"This is a mystery," Peppa said. "And mysteries need careful noses."

## Peppa Takes Charge

Peppa gathered her friends beside the field gate. Daisy watched the path. Peter the chicken checked under the pea leaves. Molly the sheep looked along the fence for loose wool, straw, or anything out of place.

"No guessing wildly," Peppa said. "We look first, then think."

Peter scratched near the post. "More straw here."

Molly spotted a trail of flattened grass. "Something dragged this way."

Peppa sniffed again. "And I smell carrots."

Farmer Joe frowned. "Carrots? I left a basket by the shed yesterday."

The basket was empty except for a muddy paw print and a piece of scarecrow sleeve.

"The trail goes toward the wood," Peppa said.

Farmer Joe opened the gate. "Then we go together."

## Peppa's Adventure in the Forest

The wood beside the farm was cool and green. Sunlight slipped between the leaves, and the path smelled of moss, carrots, and damp straw.

Peppa moved slowly so she would not miss a clue. Daisy carried a lantern, though it was still morning. Peter hopped onto low branches to look ahead. Molly kept close to Farmer Joe.

"There," Peter whispered.

In a clearing, three young rabbits were trying to stand the scarecrow against a tree. Its hat had slipped over one button eye, and its straw legs wobbled.

"He looks like a forest guard," one rabbit said.

"He was a field guard first," Peppa said gently.

The rabbits froze.

Farmer Joe crouched so he would not frighten them. "Did you borrow my scarecrow?"

The smallest rabbit nodded. "We thought nobody wanted him. He was wearing such a fine hat."

## Peppa Finds the Missing Scarecrow

Peppa looked at the scarecrow's torn sleeve, then at the rabbits' worried faces.

"You did not know he had an important job," she said.

"We are sorry," said the biggest rabbit. "Will the vegetables be all right?"

"They will be if we take him home now," Farmer Joe said.

The rabbits helped lift the scarecrow. Daisy carried the wooden post on her back. Molly gathered the fallen straw. Peter found the missing hat ribbon beneath a fern.

"Could we visit the farm sometimes?" the smallest rabbit asked.

"If you ask first," Peppa said.

"And if you nibble only from the rabbit patch," Farmer Joe added with a smile. "I can plant one near the hedge."

## The Big Rescue

Back at the farm, the crows had already gathered on the fence. They watched the lettuce with bright, hungry eyes.

Peppa hurried. "Post first."

Farmer Joe pushed the post into the soil. Daisy held it steady. Molly packed dirt around the base. Peter tied the hat ribbon. The rabbits tucked fresh straw into the sleeves.

At last, the scarecrow stood tall again.

"Caw," cried one crow, flapping away.

The others followed.

Peppa let out a proud snort. "Mystery solved. Crops protected."

Farmer Joe patted her head. "And nobody had to be cross once we understood what happened."

## What They Remembered

That afternoon, Farmer Joe planted a small rabbit patch near the hedge with carrot tops, parsley, and lettuce leaves for visitors who asked politely.

The rabbits promised to leave the field scarecrow where he belonged. Peter promised to check the fence each morning. Molly promised to watch for loose straw. Peppa promised to keep using her careful nose.

As sunset warmed the vegetable rows, the scarecrow's hat tipped in the breeze like a friendly wave.

"He looks happy to be home," Daisy said.

Peppa smiled. "So are the peas."
