## Story

## Farm Friends

Pinky the pig and Shelly the sheep were close friends on Farmer John's sunny farm. Pinky loved mud puddles, quick races, and any game that made her laugh. Shelly loved soft grass, quiet thinking, and noticing little details that others missed.

Every morning after breakfast, Pinky trotted to Shelly's pen and called, "Ready for an adventure?"

"Always," Shelly answered, smiling.

One day, their exploring led them to an old barn they had never entered before. Farmer John was nearby mending a bucket, so Shelly asked before they went inside.

"You may look around the clear path," Farmer John said. "Leave the stacked hay where it is."

Under a feed sack, Pinky found a wrinkled map with a red apple drawn in one corner.

"A map," Pinky squealed.

"Maybe it is a game," Shelly said. "Maps work better when friends read them together."

## The Discovery of the Old Barn

Pinky and Shelly spread the map on the barn floor. It showed the herb garden, the wagon path, and the apple orchard at the far side of the farm.

"The prize is near the apple trees," Shelly said, tracing the dotted line with one hoof.

"Then we should go," Pinky said.

"Carefully," Shelly added. "A good adventure still needs a good plan."

They packed two carrots, a handful of oats, and the map. Pinky carried the snacks in a little basket while Shelly kept the map tucked safely in her wool.

"If we feel unsure, we stop and think," Shelly said.

"And if thinking gets too slow, we ask Farmer John," Pinky said.

Shelly laughed. "That is a fine rule."

## The Garden Clue

The first mark on the map led to the herb garden. A little wooden sign stood beside the rosemary.

Shelly read the clue: "Find the leaves that smell like pie."

"Cinnamon leaves?" Pinky guessed.

"No cinnamon grows here," Shelly said, sniffing. "But mint can go beside apple pie."

Pinky followed the fresh scent to the mint patch. Under the leaves was a blue ribbon tied to another clue.

"Good sniffing," Shelly said.

"Good reading," Pinky replied.

The next clue pointed to the wagon path.

They followed the wide path where Farmer John had placed painted stones. Pinky carried the snack basket. Shelly carried the map. Both friends checked each turn before moving on.

## Spot Watches the Orchard

At the orchard gate, Spot the dog lay with his nose on his paws. He was Farmer John's watchdog, and he took his job seriously.

"Uh-oh," Pinky whispered. "Spot watches the apples."

"Then we should ask him," Shelly said.

Pinky blinked. "Ask?"

"He is guarding the orchard. Maybe he knows what the map means."

Pinky took a careful step forward. Spot lifted his head.

"Woof," he barked.

"We found this map," Shelly said gently. "May we come in for the game?"

Spot sniffed the paper. His tail gave one small wag.

"That old map," he said. "Farmer John made it for a harvest game years ago. The prize is real, but you must solve the last clue."

## Pinky's Clever Plan

Spot led Pinky and Shelly to three apple trees. One had smooth bark, one had twisting roots, and one had a little hollow near the bottom.

The map said, "Look where sweetness waits in the shade."

Pinky sniffed the ground. "All apples smell sweet."

"True," Shelly said, "but only one tree has shade right now."

They looked at the tree with twisting roots. Its branches stretched wide, casting a cool patch of shade over the grass.

Pinky brushed loose leaves aside. Shelly checked the map again. Soon Pinky's hoof bumped something wooden.

"A box," Pinky cried.

Spot helped them pull it free. Inside were bright red apples and a note from Farmer John: "For clever friends who work together. Please bring these to the kitchen."

"That is a good kind of prize," Shelly said. "One we can share."

## The Prize Found

Pinky and Shelly carried the apple box to the farmhouse kitchen. Farmer John laughed when he saw the old map.

"I wondered when someone would find that," he said. "Would you like to help bake an apple pie?"

"Yes, please," Pinky and Shelly said together.

Pinky washed the apples. Shelly counted them into the bowl. Spot sat by the door, hoping for a crumb but waiting politely.

"We needed your careful eyes," Pinky told Shelly.

"And your brave asking," Shelly told Pinky.

"And my excellent sniffing," Spot added.

Everyone laughed.

When the pie was ready, they shared warm slices under the old oak tree. The map had led them to apples, but the adventure had shown them how well their different strengths fit together.

## Celebrate Diversity and Friendship

After that day, Pinky and Shelly kept the map on the barn wall. It reminded them of the herb clue, the painted stones, and the orchard puzzle they solved with Spot.

"We make a good team," Pinky said.

"Because we do not have to be the same," Shelly said. "We have to help each other."

Pinky nodded. "And sometimes ask the guard dog instead of guessing."

Spot wagged his tail from the doorway. "That part was my favorite."

After that, whenever a new adventure began, Pinky brought energy, Shelly brought patience, and both friends brought kindness. That was enough to make any ordinary day feel special.
