## Story

## Meet Polly the Parrot

Polly the parrot lived in a tall pepper tree beside Farmer Lina's barn. Her feathers were green, blue, and gold, and she could copy almost any sound she heard: the squeak of the gate, the splash of the pump, even Farmer Lina's whistle at feeding time.

But Polly spent many afternoons by herself.

The cows grazed in a quiet line. The pigs rolled in the mud together. The horses raced across the pasture in pairs. Polly tried to join them, but she did not chew cud, enjoy mud, or run on four legs.

"Good morning," she called from her branch.

Some animals smiled, but soon they returned to their usual games.

Polly tucked her head under one wing. "Maybe I am too different," she whispered.

Then, near the far fence, she heard unfamiliar voices.

## Polly's Quest for Friends

Polly flew toward the voices and found three animals standing beside a tipped-over feed crate. One was a small gray donkey with a soft nose. One was a springy kangaroo with a pouch full of seed packets. One was a clever little bandit-faced animal trying to lift the latch with careful paws.

"Hello," Polly said. "Are you new here?"

"A little," said the donkey. "I am Diego. I came with Farmer Lina's cousin this morning, and I am still learning where everything is."

"I am Joey," said the kangaroo. "I hopped the wrong way after breakfast."

"And I am Rocky," said the small masked animal, finally popping the latch open. "I was helping, but now the oats are everywhere."

Polly landed on the fence post. "I know this farm from above. I can show you around."

Diego's ears lifted. "Would you truly?"

Polly's left-out feeling fluttered into something brighter. "Of course."

## A Diverse Group of Friends

Polly led the new friends past the pond, the orchard, and the vegetable beds. Each animal noticed something different.

Diego heard the wind change before anyone else. Joey saw ripe peaches high in a tree. Rocky spotted a loose hinge on the tool shed. Polly saw the whole farm at once whenever she rose into the air.

"You all pay attention in different ways," Polly said.

"So do you," Joey said. "You find paths we cannot see from the ground."

That made Polly sit taller on the fence rail.

They spent the afternoon trading stories. Diego told them about bells on mountain paths. Joey described wide dry grasslands and bright stars. Rocky explained how careful paws could open a knot, a seed pod, or a tricky gate.

Polly copied each friend's favorite sound, and soon everyone was laughing.

## Meeting New Friends

By the next morning, the group had grown. Pipi the parakeet arrived from a nearby garden, chattering faster than the sparrows. Puddles the penguin waddled in from the cool shed where Farmer Lina kept blocks of ice for market day.

"I am not built for hot fields," Puddles said, fanning himself with one flipper.

"Then we will visit the shady places first," Polly said.

Pipi flew loops around Polly. "You sound like the barn bell. Can you teach me?"

"Only if you teach me your quick garden calls," Polly said.

The farm did not feel divided into animals who belonged and animals who did not. It felt like a place full of useful differences: long ears, quick wings, strong hooves, clever paws, patient steps, and bright voices.

When the old sheep passed by, she paused to watch them.

"That is quite a flock," she said kindly.

Polly smiled. "It is our farm family."

## Exploring the Farm Together

The friends explored in a loose parade. Polly flew ahead to check the path. Diego carried Puddles across the dusty patch by the barn. Joey kept the seed packets safe. Rocky checked gates before anyone leaned on them. Pipi repeated directions so no one missed a turn.

At the cool water channel, Puddles sighed happily and dipped his feet in the water.

"Best stop on the farm," he said.

"Best stop so far," Joey said, hopping from stone to stone.

Polly perched above them and gave a warning squawk. "Loose path board."

Diego tested it gently. Rocky found a bent nail. Together they told Farmer Lina, who fixed the plank before the ducklings crossed that afternoon.

"Good eyes, Polly," Farmer Lina said.

Polly ruffled her feathers with pride. Being different had helped everyone.

## New Friends on the Farm

Later that week, Polly and her friends were playing hide-and-seek near the pumpkin patch when they heard tiny peeps from the bean rows.

Three chicks huddled under a leaf, trembling.

"We cannot find Mama Hen," one chick peeped.

"We can help," Polly said.

Each friend used a different strength. Pipi called gently in chick language. Diego lowered his head so the chicks could settle against his soft mane. Rocky followed tiny tracks in the dirt. Joey hopped to the far side of the garden to search. Puddles waited by the water channel in case they had wandered toward water.

Polly flew high and spotted Mama Hen near the corn.

"This way," Polly called.

When Mama Hen reached her chicks, she tucked them beneath her wings and clucked with relief.

"Thank you," she said. "You found them because you searched together."

Polly looked at her friends. "We each saw a different part of the farm."

"And together," Diego said, "we saw enough."

## Polly Finds Her Home

That evening, the animals gathered beneath Polly's pepper tree. The cows came from the meadow, the pigs from the mud wallow, the horses from the pasture, and Mama Hen with her chicks tucked close.

Polly sang the farm's sounds into one cheerful song: gate squeak, hoof tap, hen cluck, donkey bray, parakeet chatter, kangaroo thump, and penguin splash.

The other animals joined in as best they could. The song was not tidy, but it was full.

"I used to think I had to be like everyone else to belong," Polly said.

"I am glad you are not," Joey said. "Who else would warn us about loose path boards?"

"Or sing the breakfast whistle?" Pipi added.

Polly laughed. The farm had not changed shape, but it had changed for her. Every field, fence, and branch now held a friend who made room for her bright wings and brighter voice.
