## Story

## Introducing the Farm and Animal Friends

On a cozy farm between two green hills, four friends shared the big red barn. Cow was strong and calm. Mouse was tiny and curious. Rooster was sharp-eyed and loud enough to wake the sun. Horse was patient, powerful, and good at moving heavy things.

They helped Farmer John in different ways. Cow pulled the water cart when it was full. Mouse found dropped seeds before they were buried in straw. Rooster watched the sky from the fence. Horse hauled hay from the field to the loft.

At the end of each day, they rested in the barn where the hay smelled sweet and dry.

That was why the first drip sounded so alarming.

## The Leaky Barn

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Cow looked up. A wet spot spread across one roof board, and a drop of water landed straight in the hay.

"Oh no," Cow said. "The roof is leaking."

Rooster hopped to the window and studied the clouds. "More rain is coming before nightfall."

Horse nudged the nearest hay bale away from the drip. Mouse scampered along a beam and peered toward the hole.

"It is small," Mouse called, "but it will not stay small if the rain grows heavier."

The friends looked at the haystack, then at one another. They had to act quickly, and they had to be careful.

## Trying To Fix It Individually

Cow tried first. She lifted a wooden plank toward the roof, but she could not hold it steady and see the hole at the same time.

Horse tried next. He pushed a barrel under the leak to catch the water, but the barrel was too low, and the drops splashed onto the straw.

Rooster flew up to a low beam and pecked at a loose splinter. "I can see the trouble," he said, "but I cannot carry the patch."

Mouse squeezed into the narrow space beside the rafters. "I can reach the hole," she said, "but I cannot move the big board."

For a moment, the barn was quiet except for the dripping rain.

Then Horse said, "Maybe the problem is not that we are doing it wrong. Maybe we are doing it separately."

## The Animals Work Together

The friends made a plan.

Horse pulled the ladder from the tool wall and set it beneath the leak. Cow lifted the patch board and held it against the ladder's side so it would not wobble. Rooster watched from the beam and called directions.

"A little left," Rooster said. "Now up. Stop there."

Mouse carried a small tin of nails one at a time. She squeezed into the tight space and lined the patch over the hole. Farmer John, hearing the commotion, hurried in with a hammer and a roll of roofing cloth.

"Good thinking," he said. "Hold it steady."

Tap, tap, tap went the hammer. Pat, pat, pat went the rain.

The drip slowed.

Then it stopped.

## A Job Well Done

By sunset, the heavy rain had arrived in earnest. Rain rushed over the roof, but inside the barn the hay stayed dry.

"No drip," Mouse said from her warm nest.

"No splash," Cow added.

"No soggy hay," Horse said.

Rooster puffed his chest. "And excellent directions."

Farmer John spread fresh straw for everyone. "This barn has fine fixers," he said.

The four friends settled down together, tired but pleased. They had not all done the same work, and that was the point. The roof was mended because each friend had brought one useful strength at the right time.
