# The Farmyard Pool

_How Farmer John and his Animals Beat the Heat_

During a summer heatwave, Farmer John's animals need a cooler way to rest safely. Piglet suggests a farmyard pool, Duck solves the water problem, and the whole farm helps build shade, fences, and a refreshing place to splash.

## Story

## Welcome to Farmer John's Farm

Farmer John's farm was usually lively from breakfast until sunset. Cows grazed in the meadow, chickens scratched near the coop, horses pulled carts, and piglets rolled happily in the mud.

Then a heatwave settled over the fields.

By midmorning, the cows stood in the shade without moving. The chickens held their wings away from their sides. The horses drank extra water and stamped at the dusty ground. Even the piglets were too hot to play.

Farmer John carried bucket after bucket of fresh water.

"We need more than drinks today," he said. "We need a better way to keep everyone cool."

## The Meeting

Farmer John called a meeting under the big oak tree. The animals gathered close enough to listen but not so close that anyone felt warmer.

"We have shade," Farmer John said. "We have water troughs. But we need a safe cooling place for splashing, wading, and resting."

Piglet's ears perked up. "A pool."

The ducks quacked in approval. The horses looked interested. The chickens looked suspicious.

"Not too full," Hen said.

"With a fence," Horse added.

"And shade," Cow said.

Farmer John nodded. "A shallow farmyard pool, made safely. But where will the water come from?"

Duck waddled forward. "The rain barrel by the shed overflows every heavy rain. We can guide that water into a lined pool."

## Farmer John Calls for a Meeting to Beat the Heat

Farmer John spread a plan on the grass. He drew the shed roof, the rain barrel, a little channel, and a wide shallow pool near the oak.

"This spot has shade in the afternoon," he said. "The ground is flat, and it is far from the vegetable beds."

Duck tapped the drawing with her bill. "The water should pass through clean stones first. That keeps leaves out."

Rooster puffed up. "I can watch for anyone wandering too close while we dig."

Horse offered to pull the dirt cart. Cow offered to press the ground firm with her steady hooves. Piglet offered to test the mud, but Farmer John laughed and gave her a better job.

"You can help mark the splash zone," he said.

Piglet liked the sound of that.

## Digging Begins

They began early the next morning before the heat grew heavy.

Farmer John loosened the soil with a shovel. Horse pulled each cartload away. Cow stepped carefully around the edge to press the sides smooth. The chickens picked out pebbles and dropped them into a bucket.

"Only shallow," Farmer John reminded them. "This is for cooling off, not swimming far."

Piglet measured with a marked stick. "Still shallow."

Duck inspected the channel from the rain barrel. "It slopes the right way."

By noon, the pool shape was ready. Farmer John laid down a strong liner, then covered the edges with smooth stones so no hoof or claw would catch.

"Now we wait for water," Hen said.

Duck looked at the sky. "Or we use the water already stored."

## The Duck's Idea

Duck led everyone to the shed, where three rain barrels stood full from the rain earlier that week.

"We should not waste drinking water," Duck said. "But this rainwater was stored for the garden. We can use some for cooling today, then refill it when rain comes."

Farmer John checked the barrels and nodded. "Good thinking. We will keep enough for the vegetables and use the rest for the pool."

He opened the little wooden gate at the bottom of the first barrel. Water flowed through the stone channel, sparkling in the sun, and poured into the shallow pool.

The animals cheered as the bottom filled.

"Not yet," Farmer John said. "Safety first."

The pool would need shade cloth, a low fence, and a careful entrance before the first splash.

## Pool Construction Continues

The next jobs made the pool feel real.

Horse pulled posts from the shed. Cow helped press them into the ground while Farmer John checked that the fence was steady. The chickens carried bits of straw away from the water's edge. Duck showed where a gentle ramp should go.

"Some of us waddle," Duck said. "A ramp is better than a step."

Piglet tested the ramp at a slow walk. "Approved."

Farmer John tied shade cloth between the oak and two posts, making a cool blue patch over one side of the pool. He placed a bucket of fresh drinking water nearby, because pool water was for splashing, not sipping.

"Rules," Rooster announced from the fence. "No rushing. No crowding. Take turns."

The animals were too excited to argue.

## The Big Splash

At last, Farmer John opened the gate.

Duck went first, waddling down the ramp with great dignity. She floated in the shallow water and gave a satisfied quack.

Piglet followed with less dignity and much more splash.

"Cool," Piglet squealed.

The cows stood with water near their knees at the edge. The horses dipped their hooves, then stepped back into the shade. The chickens did not swim, but they enjoyed scratching in the damp soil nearby.

Farmer John sat under the oak with a glass of lemonade and watched the farm come back to life. The animals were not racing or working in the heat. They were cooling, resting, and taking turns.

"Best meeting ever," Piglet said.

"Fine use of stored rainwater," Duck replied.

## What They Remembered

The heatwave did not disappear, but the farm handled it better.

Each morning, Farmer John checked the water level, the fence, and the shade cloth. Duck watched for leaves in the channel. Rooster reminded everyone to take turns. Piglet became surprisingly serious about the marked stick.

"Still shallow," she reported.

The pool gave the animals a place to cool down, but it also gave them something they had built with care. Piglet had brought the idea. Duck had solved the water problem. Horse, Cow, Rooster, Hen, and Farmer John had each made it safer.

On the hottest afternoons, the farmyard filled with small splashes, soft laughs, and the cool shade of a plan that worked.
