## Story

## Introducing the Barn Buddies

Daisy the cow, Wooly the sheep, Oink the pig, and Rusty the rooster lived in the big red barn at Maple Hill Farm.

Daisy was calm and good at planning. Wooly noticed tiny details, especially if they were shaped like tasty leaves. Oink was strong, cheerful, and excellent at digging. Rusty woke everyone before sunrise and kept watch from the fence post.

Every morning, Farmer John opened the barn doors and said, "Good morning, helpers."

The Barn Buddies liked that word. Helpers.

They helped in different ways. Daisy pulled the little cart of feed. Wooly kept the lambs from wandering. Oink turned the compost heap with his snout. Rusty warned everyone if the weather changed.

One summer, the corn grew tall, the bean vines reached high, and the pumpkin patch spread wide and green. It looked like a strong harvest for Maple Hill.

## Trouble in the Fields

Then Farmer John found holes in the bean leaves.

"Oh dear," he said, kneeling by the rows. "Something is chewing the crops."

Rusty flew to the fence and looked over the field. Daisy sniffed the leaves. Wooly spotted tiny tracks in the soft dirt. Oink found a cabbage leaf nibbled into a lace pattern.

"We need a plan," Daisy said.

"We could plant herbs that bugs dislike," Wooly suggested. "Peppermint and marigolds helped near the sheep pen last year."

"I can dig the holes," Oink said.

"I can watch for more trouble," Rusty crowed.

Farmer John scratched his chin. "The seed packets are in the shed."

Wooly stepped forward. "I know where the shed is. I can fetch them."

## Searching for Seeds

Wooly trotted proudly toward the shed. She found the peppermint seeds, the marigold seeds, and a packet of basil seeds too.

On her way back, a yellow butterfly fluttered across the path.

"Just a quick look," Wooly said.

The butterfly floated past the haystack, over the ditch, and into the edge of the woods. Wooly followed until the butterfly vanished. When she turned around, every tree looked like every other tree.

"Oh," Wooly whispered. "That was not the path."

Back at the field, Daisy waited. Oink tapped one hoof. Rusty flew in a circle.

"Wooly should be back by now," Daisy said.

Rusty lifted his head. "Then we search."

## The Search for Wooly

Rusty spotted white wool caught on a bramble near the woods. Daisy followed the bent grass. Oink sniffed the seed packets where Wooly had dropped them by a mossy log.

"Wooly," Daisy called.

"Over here," came a small bleat.

They found Wooly tangled in a low branch. She was safe, but caught.

"I am sorry," she said. "I got distracted."

"We can talk about butterflies later," Oink said kindly. "First, branches."

Daisy held the branch steady. Oink pushed it up from underneath. Rusty tugged at a twig with his beak. Wooly wriggled free and shook leaves from her fleece.

The seed packets were muddy but dry inside.

"Team meeting," Daisy said. "Everyone uses a buddy until the harvest is ready."

Everyone agreed.

## Saving the Crops

The Barn Buddies worked row by row.

Oink dug small holes between the vegetables. Daisy nudged the seed packets open and helped place them where Wooly pointed. Wooly covered the seeds with soft soil. Rusty watched from the fence and crowed whenever beetles gathered too close.

Farmer John added small signs so he would remember where they planted everything. Peppermint by the beans. Marigolds near the pumpkins. Basil beside the tomatoes.

For three days, they watered, watched, and waited.

On the fourth morning, the pests had moved away from the bean leaves. Tiny green shoots poked through the soil.

"It is working," Rusty crowed.

Wooly bounced so hard that one seed packet flew into the air.

## A New Harvest Schedule

The harvest still needed care. The Barn Buddies made a schedule.

Daisy checked the rows after breakfast. Wooly watered the herb seedlings. Oink repaired muddy edges where water washed the soil away. Rusty watched for pests and also watched for butterflies, in case Wooly forgot to.

They did not all do the same job, and that was the point. The field needed Daisy's calm, Wooly's careful eyes, Oink's strength, and Rusty's lookout calls.

When the first pumpkins turned orange, Farmer John patted the fence.

"This harvest belongs to all of us," he said.

The Barn Buddies stood a little taller.

## The Celebration Feast

At harvest time, Farmer John set a long table outside the barn.

There were roasted potatoes for Oink, sweet hay for Wooly, crisp apples for Daisy, and grain cakes for Rusty. Farmer John made soup from the garden vegetables and set a little bowl of peppermint leaves in the middle of the table.

"For the protectors of the harvest," he said.

The sun went down golden over Maple Hill Farm. Daisy, Wooly, Oink, and Rusty ate together, tired and happy.

The next morning, Rusty crowed before sunrise as usual.

"Wake up, helpers."

And the Barn Buddies did.
