## Story

## Farmer Joe's Worry

Farmer Joe loved his chickens. He knew which hen liked the sunny nest box, which one complained at the feed scoop, and which one always tried to sit inside the empty egg basket.

Lately, though, the basket stayed almost empty.

"Something is wrong," Farmer Joe said, counting only two eggs where there used to be ten.

He cleaned the coop. He added fresh straw. He checked for holes in the fence. The hens clucked, scratched, and looked healthy enough, but the eggs did not return.

That afternoon, his granddaughter Lily arrived for a visit.

"You look worried, Grandpa," she said.

Farmer Joe showed her the basket.

Lily put on her thinking face. "Can I help investigate?"

"I was hoping you would," Farmer Joe said.

## Lily's Visit

Lily loved visiting the farm, especially the chicken coop. She liked the warm straw smell, the soft chicken feathers, and the way the hens seemed to gossip all day.

She and Farmer Joe watched the flock carefully.

The hens pecked at their feed, but without much interest. One hen tipped the bowl and searched underneath it as if hoping for something better. Another pecked near the compost pile.

"What have they been eating?" Lily asked.

Farmer Joe showed her the grain bin.

"Mostly cracked corn," he said. "They like it."

"I like pancakes," Lily said, "but I probably should not eat only pancakes."

Farmer Joe laughed. "Fair point."

They decided to learn more before changing anything.

## Lily's Research on Chicken Nutrition

Lily opened a farm book at the kitchen table while Farmer Joe found his notebook.

They read that chickens needed a balanced diet: grains for energy, greens and vegetables for vitamins, protein from bugs or mealworms, and calcium to help make strong eggshells.

"Cracked corn is a treat," Lily read. "Not a whole menu."

Farmer Joe wrote that down in large letters.

Together they made a plan. They would keep good chicken feed in the main bowl, add chopped greens from the garden, offer crushed oyster shell for calcium, and let the hens peck safely in the bug-filled corner by the compost.

Lily drew a chart so they could track eggs each day.

At the top she wrote: Feed, water, sunshine, safe coop.

## Feeding the Chickens

The hens were suspicious of the new menu at first.

Henrietta pecked one spinach leaf, stepped back, then pecked it again. Dotty found the mealworms and announced them with a triumphant cluck. Goldie scratched in the compost corner and uncovered three beetles.

"They are busy now," Lily said.

"Busy chickens are happier chickens," Farmer Joe said.

Each morning, they filled clean water, checked the feed, opened the safe scratching area, and marked the chart.

For two days, nothing changed.

On the third day, Lily found four eggs.

On the fifth day, there were seven.

By the end of the week, the basket felt heavy again.

## Hooray for Lily and Farmer Joe

Farmer Joe set the full egg basket on the porch rail.

"We solved it," Lily said.

"We listened to what the chickens needed," Farmer Joe said. "That is even better."

They made scrambled eggs for lunch and thanked the hens before eating. Lily gave Henrietta a tiny bow, which Henrietta accepted with a blink.

"What should we investigate next?" Lily asked.

Farmer Joe looked toward the goat pen, where one goat was standing inside an empty feed bucket.

"I may have an idea," he said.

Lily grinned and turned to a fresh page in her notebook.

## Lily's Love for Farm Animals

After the chicken mystery, Lily visited the farm more often.

She discovered that animals could not always tell people what was wrong in words. Sometimes they showed it by eating less, moving differently, making unusual sounds, or changing their habits.

Farmer Joe taught her to notice before guessing.

They checked the cows' water troughs, brushed burrs from the pony's mane, and made sure the goats had climbing logs to keep them busy. Lily kept notes, and Farmer Joe added stories from years of farm work.

"You know a lot," Lily told him.

"So do you," he said. "You ask good questions."

## Taking Good Care

The chicken chart stayed on the coop wall.

Every day, Lily or Farmer Joe checked feed, water, shells, greens, and eggs. The hens grew glossy and lively, scratching through straw and clucking over their discoveries.

One morning, Lily found an egg in the oddest place: inside Farmer Joe's old boot.

Henrietta stood nearby, looking proud.

"That was not on the chart," Lily said.

Farmer Joe laughed. "Farm animals keep us humble."

Lily added a new note at the bottom of the page:

Care means paying attention every day.

Henrietta pecked the pencil, which Lily decided meant approval.
