## Story

## First Day Jitters

Lucy Lamb woke before the rooster. Today was her first day at farm school, and her stomach felt full of jumping grasshoppers.

"What if I do not know where to sit?" she asked her mother.

"Then you can ask," her mother said.

"What if I miss you?"

"Then you can miss me and still have a good day."

That sounded difficult, but Lucy tucked the words into her mind.

At school, Penny Piglet waved from the mud kitchen. Charlie Chicken showed Lucy the coat hooks. Sammy Horse pointed out the reading blanket under the apple tree.

Lucy smiled, but she stayed near the gate until Bailey Bunny hopped over.

"I was nervous on my first day too," Bailey said. "Would you like to walk in together?"

Lucy nodded.

## Struggling to Keep Up

The first lesson was counting apples in the orchard.

Penny counted quickly. Charlie drew tally marks in the dirt. Sammy could see the high branches without standing on anything. Lucy looked at the rows and felt unsure.

"I cannot do it," she whispered.

Bailey heard her. "Try one tree at a time."

He placed three pebbles by the first tree. Lucy counted the apples and moved one pebble for each apple she found. Penny slowed down to help. Charlie made neat marks beside the pebbles.

Soon Lucy had counted a whole row.

"I did that?" she asked.

"You did," Bailey said. "With a good system."

Lucy looked at the orchard again. It still seemed big, but not impossible.

## Lucy Comes Back Early

The next week, Lucy arrived early.

Farm school was not only counting. It was planting lettuce seeds, reading weather signs, matching animal tracks, and listening to stories about the old harvest wagon.

Lucy liked the reading blanket best. She liked how books could make the barnyard feel bigger.

One day, the teacher read about roots. Afterward, everyone planted beans in clear jars so they could watch the roots grow.

Lucy checked her bean every morning.

"It has a tiny tail," she told Sammy.

"Root," Sammy said.

"A root tail," Lucy said, and Sammy agreed because it did look like one.

Little by little, Lucy stopped counting the minutes until home. She began wondering what the next lesson would be.

## Lucy's Big Day

At the end of the term, the farm school held a celebration in the barn.

There were paper garlands, apple muffins, and a display table for everyone's work. Lucy placed her apple-counting chart beside her bean jar. The bean had grown leaves and was leaning toward the window.

When it was time for certificates, Lucy's ears trembled.

"Lucy Lamb," the teacher called, "for brave beginnings and careful learning."

Lucy walked forward. Her friends clapped. Her mother stood near the door, smiling with shiny eyes.

Lucy took the certificate in her mouth with careful teeth so she would not wrinkle it.

"I was nervous," she told the teacher.

"And you came anyway," the teacher said.

## Under the Apple Tree

After the celebration, Lucy sat under the apple tree with Bailey, Penny, Charlie, and Sammy.

"I still get nervous sometimes," Lucy said.

"Me too," Bailey said. "Especially before spelling."

"I get nervous near puddles that look splashier than expected," Penny added.

Charlie fluffed her feathers. "I get nervous when the wind shuts doors."

Lucy looked around at her friends. Everyone was brave about something and nervous about something else.

The next morning, Lucy woke before the rooster again. This time her stomach felt fluttery, but in an excited way.

She carried her certificate to the kitchen, showed it to her family, and then hurried toward the gate.

Farm school was waiting, and Lucy knew where to sit.
