## Story

## Molly's Farm Adventure

Molly Goat loved three things: hopping onto low fences, chasing butterflies, and seeing what Farmer John kept in interesting buckets.

One morning, a butterfly fluttered past Farmer John as he bent to read a seed packet. Molly sprang after it.

Bump.

Farmer John's glasses flew off his nose and landed on the path with a crack.

Molly froze. Farmer John picked up the glasses and sighed. One lens had broken.

"I am sorry," Molly bleated, drooping her ears.

Farmer John rubbed her head gently. "It was an accident."

Molly still felt awful. "Can I help until you get new ones?"

Farmer John looked toward the busy farmyard. "I could use a careful helper."

Molly stood straight. Careful was not her usual specialty, but she was ready to learn.

## Molly Takes Responsibility

Farmer John gave Molly the morning feed list.

"Pigs first, then chickens, then cows," he said. "And no nibbling the list."

Molly looked offended for two whole seconds.

At the pig pen, she helped tip grain into the trough. At the chicken coop, she waited while Farmer John counted scoops. Waiting was hard. Chickens moved in exciting ways, and the feed looked crunchy.

"Careful helper," Molly whispered to herself.

By noon, the animals were fed and watered. Molly had only tried to taste one bucket, and Farmer John said that showed progress.

"Thank you," he told her.

Molly felt better than she expected. Saying sorry had mattered. Helping afterward mattered too.

## Molly Notices Farm Jobs

The next day, Farmer John showed Molly how many small jobs kept the farm running.

They collected eggs gently, because eggs were not pebbles. They checked the cow's water trough, because animals needed clean water before anyone noticed they were thirsty. They pulled weeds from the carrot row, though Molly had to ask three times which leaves were weeds and which were carrots.

"Farm work is mostly noticing," Farmer John said.

Molly noticed a loose gate latch by the sheep pen.

"That looks wiggly," she said.

Farmer John leaned close and squinted without his glasses. "So it does."

They fixed it together with a new hook. That afternoon, the sheep stayed exactly where they belonged.

Molly felt proud of noticing before trouble happened.

## Molly's Friday Chores

On Friday, Farmer John rode into town to collect his new glasses. He left Molly with a short list.

Water the lettuce.
Check the hens.
Keep the geese out of the pea patch.

The lettuce was easy. The hens were fussy but manageable. The geese were a marching band with beaks.

"Shoo," Molly said.

The geese did not shoo.

Molly remembered the feed bucket. She rattled it near the pond, and the geese followed the sound away from the peas. Then she closed the little garden gate.

When Farmer John returned, the lettuce was damp, the hens were calm, and the pea patch had survived.

"Molly," he said, putting on his new glasses, "you did careful work."

Molly bounced once, then stopped before bumping anything.

## Molly Discovers the Joy of Helping

Farmer John's glasses were fixed, but Molly kept looking for useful things to do.

She carried small seed packets in a basket. She watched for loose latches. She stood beside Farmer John when he repaired the fence and handed him nails from a tin.

Sometimes she still wanted to chase butterflies. Sometimes she did chase them, but not near people holding breakable things.

One evening, Farmer John set a crisp apple beside her.

"For my helper," he said.

Molly ate it slowly, which was unusual for Molly. She was thinking.

Helping had not made the accident disappear. But it had helped her become someone Farmer John could trust.

That felt even better than climbing the low fence behind the barn.

## Molly's Farm Adventures

By the end of the week, Molly knew the farm differently.

She knew which gate squeaked, which hen hid eggs in the straw corner, and which watering can leaked if it tipped too far left. She knew that hard work could make her tired and happy at the same time.

Farmer John wrote a new sign for the barn:

Molly's Jobs
Notice.
Ask.
Help.
Do not eat the paper.

Molly thought the last line was unnecessary, but fair.

The next time a butterfly drifted past, Molly watched it flutter over the fence. Then she checked to make sure Farmer John was not in the way before she chased it.
