# Piggy's Potluck Party

_Including Everyone at the Potluck_

Piggy the Pig is excited to throw a party for all his animal friends. He wants everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves, but he's not sure how to do it without anyone feeling left out or hurt. With the help of his best friend Bunny, they come up with an idea that involves everyone bringing their favorite dish to share. When Fox forgets his food at home, Piggy learns that a good party is about kindness, not perfect plans.

## Story

## Piggy Plans a Party

Piggy wanted to host the best farmyard party of the spring. He swept the barn floor, hung paper flowers from the rafters, and made a guest list on a cabbage leaf.

Bunny liked crunchy carrots. Fox liked games with hiding. Squirrel liked anything with nuts. Duck liked puddles, which Piggy could not put on the snack table but could remember for later.

Piggy's list grew longer and longer.

"What if I forget something?" he asked himself. "What if someone has nothing they like? What if the games are too fast or too noisy?"

He tried planning five menus and eight games. By lunchtime, he was lying on his back in the straw, worried instead of excited.

That was when Bunny hopped in.

"Your party face looks like a thundercloud," she said.

Piggy sighed. "I want everyone to feel welcome."

## Bunny's Brilliant Idea

Bunny sat beside Piggy and tapped one paw against her chin.

"What if everyone brings something they enjoy?" she said. "A potluck party."

Piggy sat up. "Then the food would not all depend on me."

"And everyone would have something to share," Bunny added.

They made invitations together. Piggy wrote, Please bring a favorite food if you can. Bunny added, If you cannot, please bring yourself.

Piggy liked that part best.

On party morning, Bunny brought carrot salad. Squirrel brought acorn biscuits. Duck brought berry juice in a jug with a cork that squeaked. Dog brought a blanket big enough for everyone to sit on.

Piggy felt his worry shrinking.

## The Potluck Party

Then Fox arrived with empty paws.

"I forgot my apple tarts," Fox said quietly. "I left them cooling on the windowsill."

Piggy's worry jumped back up. He did not want Fox to feel embarrassed. He also did not want to make a fuss in front of everyone.

"I am glad you came," Piggy said. "The invitation said bringing yourself was enough."

Fox's ears lifted a little.

When the animals sat down to eat, Piggy placed Fox beside him and passed the carrot salad first. Soon everyone was sharing. Squirrel split his acorn biscuits. Bunny traded carrots for berry juice. Dog cut the sandwiches into small triangles so the smallest animals could hold them.

Fox smiled. "I can teach the hiding game after lunch."

"Perfect," Piggy said.

## Playing Together

After they ate, Fox led hide-and-seek around the hay bales.

Squirrel hid in the rafters, which everyone agreed was clever but perhaps too clever. Duck hid behind a bucket, though her tail peeked out. Piggy hid behind the feed bin and giggled so loudly that Bunny found him in three seconds.

Next they played pass-the-pumpkin. The pumpkin was small, round, and slippery enough to make everyone laugh. When the music stopped, whoever held it named something they were thankful for.

"Friends who share biscuits," said Fox.

"Invitations with kind words," said Bunny.

"Parties that do not need to be perfect," Piggy said.

The animals cheered.

## Piggy Finds Fox

As the sun lowered, Piggy found Fox near the fence.

"I am sorry you felt bad about the tarts," Piggy said.

"I was worried I had ruined the party," Fox admitted.

"You helped make the best game," Piggy said. "That counts."

Fox grinned. "Next time I will bring the tarts and the game."

When the party ended, Piggy looked around the barn. There were crumbs on the blanket, carrot leaves under the table, and one acorn biscuit hidden in the rafters for later.

It had not been the perfect party Piggy imagined.

It had been better: a party where everyone had a place, even when something was forgotten.
