## Story

## Farmer Joe's Concerns

Farmer Joe stepped onto the porch and looked at the sky. Gray clouds were gathering beyond the cornfield.

Sparky the sheepdog sat beside him, tail thumping.

"Heavy rain coming," Farmer Joe said. "We should check the far gate before the wind gets worse."

Sparky barked once. Checking gates was important work.

They crossed the tomato rows, the pumpkin patch, and the low pasture where the sheep grazed. Farmer Joe fixed one loose latch and tied a rope around a rattling post.

The first raindrop landed on Sparky's nose.

Farmer Joe looked toward home. "Time to head back."

Then thunder rolled over the hills.

## The Rain Grows Heavy

Rain came hard and fast. The path turned muddy, and the fields blurred behind a curtain of water.

Sparky stayed close to Farmer Joe until a gust of wind blew a sheet of tin loose from the old tool shed. It clattered across the ground with a startling bang.

The sheep scattered. Sparky dashed after them, guiding them away from the fence and into the shelter of the lower barn.

When the sheep were safe, Sparky turned back.

Farmer Joe was not on the path.

Sparky barked and listened. He heard rain, wind, and one worried crow.

He ran to the lower barn, where birds, squirrels, mice, and a nervous barn cat huddled in the dry straw.

Sparky barked twice. He needed help.

## Sparky Takes Charge

The animals understood enough.

The crows flew above the fields to look for Farmer Joe's yellow raincoat. The squirrels checked fence posts along the lanes. The mice searched under hedges where a person might drop a glove or tool. The barn cat stayed near Sparky, pretending she was only helping because the rain was annoying.

Sparky sniffed the mud near the tool shed. Farmer Joe's bootprints led toward the creek path.

The creek could rise quickly in heavy rain.

Sparky barked sharply and started that way. The animals followed in the safest order: crows above, squirrels along the fence, Sparky on the path, cat beside him, mice tucked under the hedge line.

## The Creek Path

A fallen branch blocked the creek path. Sparky could squeeze under, but the smaller animals could not pass safely.

The squirrels scampered across the branch and shook loose the twigs. Sparky pulled one end with his teeth. The cat pushed with both front paws while pretending not to be impressed by teamwork.

The branch rolled aside.

Farther on, water covered part of the path. The crows called from above, pointing them toward higher ground. The mice found a dry tunnel through the roots of an old willow.

At last, Sparky smelled Farmer Joe's raincoat.

He ran to a hollow beside the creek where Farmer Joe sat with one boot caught in mud.

"Sparky," Farmer Joe called. "Good dog."

## The Helpers Find Farmer Joe

Sparky tugged at Farmer Joe's sleeve. The cat meowed loudly toward the farm. The crows circled above, calling for the others.

Farmer Joe freed his boot with a squelch. He was wet and tired, but not hurt.

"Lead the way," he told Sparky.

The animals guided him home by the safe route. The crows watched the creek. The squirrels showed where the branch had been cleared. The mice kept to the hedge, squeaking whenever the path dipped. The cat walked beside Farmer Joe as if she had planned everything.

When the farmhouse lights came into view, Sparky barked with relief.

Everyone made it back before the creek rose any higher.

## Relying on Others

Inside the barn, Farmer Joe wrapped Sparky in a towel and set out warm mash for the animals.

"I owe you all thanks," he said. "Sparky led, but every one of you helped."

The crows fluffed their feathers. The squirrels shared a proud glance. The mice nibbled grain. The cat closed her eyes as if praise was ordinary, though her purr gave her away.

Sparky rested his head on Farmer Joe's knee.

He had been brave, but the others had helped. That mattered.

## Celebrating Together

By morning, the rain had passed. The fields were muddy, the creek was high, and the farm was safe.

Farmer Joe repaired the tool shed, this time with extra nails. Sparky checked the sheep. The crows supervised from the roof. The squirrels argued over who had moved the biggest twig.

At sunset, Farmer Joe sat on the porch with Sparky beside him.

"Little dog," he said, "big heart."

Sparky wagged his tail. Across the yard, the cat pretended not to hear, the crows settled in the oak, and the farm grew quiet under a clean, rain-washed sky.
