## Story

## The Strange Footprints

Tommy Piglet found the first footprint beside the water trough. It was not a hoofprint, not a pawprint, and not a chicken mark.

"Bella," he called. "Come look at this."

Bella Bunny hopped over and lowered her nose close to the mud.

"Interesting," she said.

Tommy swallowed. "Interesting like a mystery?"

"Interesting like a mystery," Bella said. "Mysteries need looking, not panicking."

The prints crossed the barnyard in a wobbly line. Some were clear. Some were smudged. One had a bit of hay pressed into the middle.

Tommy and Bella followed the trail past Daisy Cow, Coco Chicken, and Mr. Ed Horse. None of their tracks matched.

Near the blackberry bushes, the trail disappeared under a low branch.

"Ready?" Bella asked.

Tommy took a breath. "Ready."

## Clues in the Mud

Before they crawled under the branch, Bella showed Tommy how to compare clues.

"Cow tracks are split hooves," she said, pointing to the mud near the field. "Chicken tracks have three front toes. Rabbit tracks often come in pairs because we hop."

Tommy looked at his own little hoofprints. "Piglet tracks are rounder."

"Exactly," Bella said.

The mystery prints were different. They were small, long, and smudgy, as if someone had stepped in mud and then dragged something behind.

Tommy noticed a crumb near one print. Bella found a second crumb beside the fence. Then Tommy found a whole trail of crumbs leading toward the tool shed.

"Aha," Bella said. "A hungry clue."

## Bravery Beside a Friend

The tool shed door creaked in the wind. Tommy's ears drooped.

"Maybe we should get Farmer Joe," he whispered.

"Good idea," Bella said. "Detectives can ask for help."

They fetched Farmer Joe, who opened the shed door wide. Inside, something rustled behind a sack of oats.

Tommy stepped behind Bella. Bella stepped closer to Farmer Joe.

Out waddled a duckling with muddy feet, a piece of twine around one ankle, and crumbs on her beak.

"Peep," said the duckling.

Farmer Joe gently removed the twine. The duckling had slipped from the pond pen, stepped in mud, dragged the twine behind her, and followed the smell of spilled grain.

Tommy laughed with relief. "Not a mystery anymore."

"A messy duckling," Bella said.

## A Fun Day at School

The next day, Tommy and Bella brought their drawings of the tracks to farm school.

Ms. Daisy let them lead a track walk around the yard. The class found hoofprints, pawprints, claw marks, and one tiny line where a snail had crossed a damp stone.

Tommy showed everyone how the duckling's twine had made the mystery mark.

"I was nervous at first," he admitted. "But Bella helped me look closely."

"And Tommy found the crumbs," Bella said.

After class, Ms. Daisy pinned their track chart to the wall. It read:

Look carefully.
Compare clues.
Ask for help.

Tommy and Bella stood beneath the chart, proud and muddy-footed. There would be more mysteries on the farm, and now they knew how to begin.
