# The Harvest Heroes

_A Farm Teamwork Adventure_

Harvest season arrives on Farmer John's farm, and every animal has a useful job. When heavy rain changes the plan, the cows, chickens, pigs, and duckling Timmy work safely with Farmer John to bring the crops into the barn.

## Story

## Welcome to the Farm

Morning warmed Farmer John's fields. Corn rustled beside the fence, apples glowed red in the orchard, and potatoes waited under soft brown soil.

Farmer John opened the barn doors and greeted the animals.

"Harvest season starts today," he said. "We have food to gather before cold weather comes."

Daisy Cow lifted her head. "What can we do?"

"Different jobs for different helpers," Farmer John said.

The cows would pull light wagons. The chickens would find dropped seeds and peck bugs away from the baskets. The pigs would nose loose soil around potatoes. Timmy Duckling would count each basket with a chalk mark on the barn board.

Timmy puffed up. "Counting is important."

"It is," Farmer John said. "A harvest needs careful counting."

## Jobs for Everyone

Farmer John drew the plan in chalk: apples, potatoes, corn, and seeds.

Daisy and the other cows pulled the apple wagon along the wide path. Farmer John picked apples from the low branches and placed them gently on straw.

The pigs worked in the potato row. They pushed loose soil aside with their snouts while Farmer John lifted the potatoes into baskets.

The chickens scratched near the garden edge, finding spilled seeds and keeping them in neat piles for next year's planting.

Timmy marked the board.

One basket of apples.

Two baskets of potatoes.

Three piles of seeds.

No one had the same job, but every job moved the harvest forward.

## A Change in the Weather

After lunch, gray clouds gathered over the hill. Farmer John looked up and clapped his hands twice.

"New plan," he called. "We stop field work and move the filled baskets inside."

Daisy wanted to finish one more row, but Farmer John shook his head.

"Food matters," he said. "Safe helpers matter more."

So the animals changed jobs. The cows pulled the filled wagons to the barn. The pigs pushed empty baskets under the roof. The chickens guided Timmy away from puddles while he counted each load.

Rain began tapping on the barn as the last full wagon rolled inside.

"We did not finish every row," Daisy said.

"We finished the right work for today," Farmer John replied.

## Seeds and Potatoes

The rain passed before evening, leaving the fields damp and shining.

Farmer John checked the soil. "The potato field is too soft for wagons now, but hand baskets will work tomorrow."

The next morning, the animals returned with a slower plan. The pigs loosened soil. Farmer John lifted potatoes. The chickens kept seeds dry in covered pails. Daisy and the cows waited on the firm path so the wagon wheels would not sink.

Timmy counted again.

"Four baskets of potatoes," he said. "Five baskets. Six."

"Good counting," Daisy said.

Timmy stood taller. Small helpers could make large jobs clearer.

## The Celebration Feast

By the end of the week, the barn smelled like apples, corn, potatoes, and dry hay.

Farmer John set out a thank-you supper in the yard. The cows had sweet hay. The pigs had chopped pumpkins. The chickens had grain. Timmy had a shallow bowl of greens and peas.

"To the harvest heroes," Farmer John said.

Daisy looked around the table. "Who are the heroes?"

Farmer John smiled. "All of you. A hero notices the job, works carefully, and helps the team."

Timmy pointed to the chalkboard, which was full of careful marks.

"Then the board helped too," he said.

"The board helped," Farmer John agreed.

The animals laughed, ate, and rested under the evening sky. The harvest was in the barn, and every helper knew they had been needed.
